Steve Rogers (semi) Daily

What is this: The All New Invaders by James Robinson
Why I love it: Before Marvel was Marvel, during the Golden Age of comics, the characters of Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, Jim Hammond (the Human Torch...not to be confused with Johnny Storm, same powers different characters), Torro (Hammond's side-kick) and Namor were a part of Timely Publications which would later become Marvel. When Marvel brought Steve back in the 60's they referenced the first group he worked with in WW2, the Invaders (in the comics the Howling Commandos were actually Nick Fury's team, Cap's team was the Invaders). Basically the Invaders were all of Timely's (Marvel's) first and biggest characters in one group. The mention of the Invaders in the Avengers comics sparked interest so an offshoot Invaders comic was born, set during WW2, it covered Cap and companies adventures. Since then it has been tackled a number of times, the image above from a 2014 run that reunited the Invaders in modern times. The Invaders are great, those four personalities (Torro didn't make it to the future), completely different, but bonded by brotherhood, makes for great fun. And the way they rib each other is hilarious. Definitely worth a read.

I have always been a little confused about the fandom love for Namor. I just don't get it, but I know it is because I haven't really read a lot about the character. Did he come back to Marvel for the MCU recently or what? There's been a lot of talk about him lately.
Namor is... tricky. Yes, Marvel has the rights back, but it was a long road to get there. Back when Marvel was in danger of going bankrupt and they started selling the movie rights to their properties, Universal actually purchased Namor (and Hulk). And they had plans to make a movie for both properties. Unfortunately their first attempt, the 2003 Hulk film (the one with Eric Bana) flopped majorly. But there were still plans to go ahead with the Namor movie at Universal, they even had a director (Chris Columbus of Harry Potter 1 and 2) and a writer. The project just kept falling through and eventually Chris Columbus left. But because there was an intent to make a film, they were a little more reluctant to let go of Namor the way they did Hulk. But finally, in 2016, Joe Quesada announced that yes, Marvel has the rights to Namor back, so that's kind of why everyone is talking about him. He's finally home. Which is fitting because Namor is even older than Steve by two years, Namor first premiered for Timely in 1939, whereas Steve premiered in 1941. And Universal would have screwed it up, so I'm glad he's back in Disney's hands.
Namor is an acquired taste. He is arrogant, he hates humankind for polluting his oceans and thinking they can just destroy everything in their wake, he has very little tact and just says whatever is on his mind with no brain-to-mouth filter. Did you ever watch Buffy? Namor is Cordelia, lol. But to be honest I kind of like Namor's blunt honesty. It makes for some great comedic moments. He's always straight forward, all the other characters know where they stand with him. He doesn't beat around the bush. His relationship with Steve Rogers is adorable. Because here is a guy who continually expresses a dislike for humans, but Steve is one of the very few humans he respects. There's these cute couple of panels, I'll post them here today, where Namor is draped over Steve's chair in a conference room, going off about how mankind is draining his oceans, but the minute Steve walks into the room he's like 'oh pardon, here's your chair back'. :D
(He also has affection for Bucky but likes to rib him. They tease each other relentlessly.)
