An interesting post from /reads - What are your thoughts?

reads - Does Addiction Treatment Require A Higher Power?

Long reads, short reads, interesting articles that aren't straight up news or clickbait.

Huh. I'd never thought about this. In my reading and experience, it seems that shame is a major aspect of the cycle of addiction. I think AA-type programs CAN be used healthily, but I think they don't do much to address the shame aspect of addiction, and in some cases, might actually compound it. I also hadn't realized how OLD 12-step programs are.

I do think it's helpful for many people to rely on a higher power in overcoming addiction, but I don't think it should be the only tool.
