Mindfulness-the practice of cultivating awareness and presence-is the business buzz word. Touted as a wellbeing panacea, mindfulness training has been adopted by American institutions of all kinds, from corporations to prisons, schools, and hospitals. Writer Ruth Whippman, author of America the Anxious, blames the mindfulness craze for contributing to national anxiety.

This is an interesting perspective, I've never encountered the opinion that mindfulness contributes to anxiety in any way. I would disagree - it seems that mindfulness is being used as a scapegoat in the article. The anxiety the article refers to is caused by negative conditions, not the awareness of them. Negative business practices aren't made any more acceptable or correct by utilizing mindfulness in the workplace.
However, I'm not aware of what kind of mindfulness trainings are being taught in these big companies, and I am aware that many things in them are spun for profit and productivity, and not necessarily well-being. The idea that mindfulness might be being manipulated and used to further instill complacency in employees is possible, and sad.
