On Overcoming a Deadly Case of Writer's Block

Noir on a hippie commune. Editors and agents are always looking for a hook-something short and sweet that'll grab a reader's attention. As far as hooks go, I think this one is pretty good. Minimalist but evocative. Two things that seem diametrically opposed, but fit together better than you'd expect.

Good article! This part especially struck me:

So that was the problem. The thing I’d been (ahem, blush) praised for in my first two books was the thing that was giving me trouble with the third: Sense of place.

She doesn't really go into it, but I bet the main reason scene was giving her so much trouble is because she was praised for it before... thereby building up a bunch of craft-paralyzing pressure. Ugh, expectations.

I liked her tip about letting go of perfectionism & not getting caught up in unnecessary details... now if only I could take that advice, lol. ;)) Thanks for sharing!!
