At a cost of over $900m, the Mané Garrincha Stadium is the second most expensive football stadium in the world behind Wembly Stadium in England. The stadium was designed to fit into the modern buildings composing Brasília(I'll do a special on Brasília in the future. It is, after all considered the "ideal city" and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A "forest" of columns
The circular roof is a double-skinned suspension system providing broad coverage and a more visually appealing interior with the structural elements hidden. The membrane (upper skin) is PTFE-coated fiberglass, while the under skin is back open mesh fabric.
The main structure of the stadium is poured-in-place reinforced concrete preserving the stadium and city's minimalistic design.
