Tonight's track is by pianist Tommy Flanagan. In the '50s and '60s, Flanagan made a living as an NYC studio musician. He played on many historic records, including Coltrane's "Giant Steps", Sonny Rollins' "Saxophone Colossus", and Wes Montgomery's "The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery". He eventually got a gig as Ella Fitzgerald's full-time accompanist. After leaving Fitzgerald's band, he struck out on his own and recorded several albums as leader, including this album, "Eclypso". This is the title track of that album. Bassist George Mraz really stands out in this one with his tumbaos (Latin-style syncopated bass lines) on the head.
