Godfather (cocktail)
I was in a bad mood last night, so I went looking for a new cocktail. I stumbled upon the Godfather. It is possibly the simplest cocktail I know, but very enjoyable.
You make the Godfather with scotch whiskey, amaretto, and ice. That's it! Pour the whiskey and amaretto into a glass filled with ice (I used an ice ball) and stir gently.
The origin of the drink, and its name, are not explicitly known. Legend, however, has it that it was the favorite drink of Marlon Brando, who starred in the original Godfather adaptation, hence the name. It is also possible that the relationship goes amaretto, to italian, to the mob, to The Godfather, a movie about the mob. Though that seems like a bit of a stretch to me.
I personally loved it. A lot of whiskey cocktails hide the whiskey flavor. The amaretto, however, just enhanced the whiskey flavor. Additionally, the alcohol content will be between 30 and 40 percent. Which is lovely for the nights when you just want to forget the world.

That sounds really nice!
Twas. Just chilled, drank my cocktail, and watched the world burn.
Reminds me of that time travel futurama episode!
That actually sounds good. How much whiskey to how much amaretto?
Ooops. I perhaps should have mentioned that in the post 😆
One to one.
Thanks. That's easy to remember : )
To be that guy this isn't technically a cocktail. Cocktails require 3 ingredients 😄
Is there a name for two ingredient drinks?
I don't know!
Easy.
Mr. Dan, I'm interested in knowing from whence (yeah I said that) you draw your definition. And did you just "actually..." sweet @TheOtherSideOfThePillow? :) My take is that a highball or a duo, as this is, would be considered a type of cocktail, but that is from a very brief bit of internet research. I'm not well versed in cocktails.
TBH I don't feel like tracking down sources right now so I'm going to go from memory. Cocktails were loosely defined as 3 ingredients:
It wasn't until the invent of bitters that the word cocktail was invented, and it's arguable where this happened (thought I'll choose to believe it happened in New Orleans with the Sazerac cocktail).
Once people began referring to them as cocktails, they morphed quite a bit over the years.
Thank you. I will continue searching for that source. And since I absolutely adore you and respect your work, I won't give you too much shit for correcting someone and not backing it up. ;) (This may already be too much. I rarely know where that line is. If so, my apologies.)
I only did it because he works with me 😄
There it is. The piece of the puzzle I was missing. (I still rather enjoy giving you shit.) Anyway, I'm off to buy bitters. :)
May I know what whisky you used?
The original Godfather calls for scotch. I just used some High West Rye that I had around.
See, I'm interested in knowing what it would taste like with something peated, but I don't want to incur the wrath of the person I sleep with by using his Laphroige. ;)
Then buy your own scotch! It's pricy, but a good whiskey can last you for months.
Hey, now. I do buy my own Scotch... Actually, Glenmorangie would probably be quite tasty in that.
I apologize for implying you didn't!
Thank you. I just don't usually buy the heavily peated Islay stuff.
