Another week, another theme on JBB. Up until now, I've mostly posted classic tracks from the '50s and '60s. So this week we're going to feature contemporary artists. All of the tracks that will be featured this week are less than a decade old.

What I want to demonstrate this week is that Jazz is a living art form. It's not just an older form of music that ossified in the 1960s. It's changed quite a bit since then, and there are new developments even today. Contemporary jazz draws upon a lot of influences. Besides the jazz of days past, it also synthesizes disparate styles like funk, rock, R&B, Latin, and even hip-hop.

And who better to demonstrate this that master bassist Christian McBride. He leads a piano trio, one of the classic formats of jazz, to play a modern, hip-hop-inflected run through "The Lady in My Life", a pop hit originally performed by Michael Jackson. This track comes from the trio's live album "Live at the Village Vanguard", which was released just last year, and features several outstanding renditions of standards, originals, and covers.
