Meditating with cigars

Before I say anything, by no means I mean to promote smoke over health. I believe everyone has their own way to meditate.

I was probably induced to smoking since it seems to give me some status (or at least I like to think that way) think about it, you drink beer, you gather with people who drink beer, you drink wine and get to meet wine connoisseurs and so on… this led me to meet really interesting people.

Every has a story to tell, and just like coffee, cigars seem to have a way helping people feel comfortable and tell their tales behind the smoke; how they started smoking, why, their past, the tale of their first love, advices etc…

But one interesting face of cigars, which I discovered on my own was that it calms myself, and I don’t mean in the way nicotine calms a cigarette addict since I smoke a week per week. When smoking by myself in the balcony, I found myself relaxing, forgetting about anxiety and letting things go for the day or for the week.

When you’re smoking a cigar you’re trying to taste its complex tastes, what notes you sense, just like drinking a fine wine, this takes practice and getting used to. This leads to you concentrating on the moment, on the taste itself and therefore on your breathing which is similar to mindful meditation (of course scaled down).

Even the smoke ripples, form and smoothness can help you calm yourself, I was met an old man who got blind, he used to be a smoker but my curiosity let me to ask; why not smoking anymore since it had nothing to do with the vision, his answer was that he enjoyed looking at the smoke was the part he enjoyed the most of smoking fine cigars, more than anything, more than the taste, the visual experience he got.
