The Magicians Is Becoming the Most Sexually Aware Show on TV
The Magicians Is Becoming the Most Sexually Aware Show on TV
The Magicians is a show that's full of contradictions. At times it's refreshing and brilliant, but then it's so silly I can't believe an adult wrote the story. (At one point, there's an actual forest of dick rocks.) But if there's one thing it's good at, it's having a smart, thoughtful, and thoroughly progressive portrayal of sex...
I think pretty much everything this article says I agree with. How they've handled Julia's rape is pretty remarkable, even just in that it hasn't gone away. She wasn't suddenly over it. She's been continuously angry and motivated toward revenge in a way that feels empowering. There's only one route to justice for her, and she has to make it happen.
Her greatest ally in this is another woman who we didn't quite trust before, but because she's stood by Julia, she's earned trust now.
It seems to be that this is now a woman's story in the way that Jessica Jones was also a woman's story.

I've never read the books, but I'm thinking of trying them. I was in love with the first season of the show, and it's true that it seems very nonchalant when it comes to sexuality, and I like that. Season two hasn't been that interesting to me so I've stopped watching as the episodes air, but I still plan to watch them all.
Quentin's enthusiasm for magic and the books he loves reminds me a lot of myself, so even though he's annoying, I try not to be too mad at him. I'm forever fond of Marina for showing up when Julia needed her most, despite the fact that they were at odds, and even enemies. I don't think Marina gets enough credit for that.
The things I've heard about the books make me think I would not particularly like them, especially since my first exposure was to the show. But if you give them a shot, I'd be interested to hear what you think.
If I get into them, I'll try to remember to @ you if I talk about them. I'm starting a personal blog here so it'll probably go in there. :-)
I've never read the books either, but I've had several friends either read them or attempt to read them and they all echo basically the same thing. Above all, no one liked it lol. From what I can tell, the show draws a lot on the books but changes it a bit to make it work on TV (which we assumed anyway). I got about a page in and peaced out myself, so I'd be interested in hearing what you or anyone else who decides to give them a go too thinks about them.
I absolutely love Marina and that she was there for Julia when she needed her even though they weren't friends. I wish that they developed more of a storyline for her rather than what happened. I'm forever sad about that.
If you take all of Quentin's nerdisms and threw it into a cauldron, it's me. I was like OH MY GOD when I first started it lol. I love all of the characters though <3
I haven't watched much of The Magicians but this is pretty interesting to me.
I have zero interest in the books, but I quite like the show. A lot of the things they do... they don't really make a big deal out of how unusual is it. Quentin is super annoying as a person, but weirdly sexually experimental.
Hmmm I might have a dabble. I think it's one my Dad's wife watches. Maybe next time I'm down that way I'll ask. She and I tend to mesh on some of our TV and Movie interests
I love the show lol. I inhaled the first season on netflix and got a bunch of people into it a week later. I was like HSKD:GH:KDFHG EVERYONE NEEDS TO WATCH THIS!!!!
