Your ultimate source for movies.
Just saw Star Trek: Beyond...
... and loved it. Really nice end to the trilogy. There were a few nods to Leonard Nimoy, which I thought was super appropriate and lovely, and the way they defeat the baddies was delightful. (Kinda reminded me of Guardians of the Galaxy... wonder if that's where they got the idea.)
Anyone else seen it?

I'm not sure about Guardians of the Galaxy being any kind of sole inspiration. Justin Lin has been directing Fast and Furious movies, and Simon Pegg has always been a funny-with-heart writer. GotG didn't really create any new tropes. (It itself is based off a comic that's basically Firefly which is, whatever Whedon says, really obviously inspired by some anime, and so on.)
That out of the way, I loved it a lot. It felt like it actually enjoyed being a Star Trek movie, while the other two felt like they desperately wanted to not be Star Trek movies. It wasn't so tryhard.
YES. I just saw Beyond. I loved it. Such a return to form... And the "Sabotage" scene also reminded me of Guardians ;)
I especially loved how understated it was. How it starts with Kirk (and crew) being bored in space. I prefer character-driven films/tv, so the second act was my favourite bit, where all the characters paired off and eventually found their way back to each other (and Jaylah! "Montgomery Scottie").
I just published a review of the film on my website FAN/FIC Magazine, if you're interested. I didn't write it but I agree with pretty much everything in it. ;)
