The order of Star Wars movies creation
Does anyone else wish that the Star Wars movies would be made and released in a normally ordered way? Knowing that the movies are based off books already written, I'd rather watch one long continuing story, rather than bouncing around from prequel to sequel and back again. I really haven't seen too many previews for Rogue one, and I may be wrong in that Luke Skywalker isn't in it, but why get us all worked up by seeing Luke Skywalker at the end of The Force Awakens, then not make the next movie to continue the story where it left off? It just seems ridiculous to me that they'd do that to us. If you're gonna sit down and make a night of watching all the Star Wars movies, I assume that nobody here would watch The Force Awakens and then watch The Empire Strikes Back right after it. It just feels like the same difference to me.

The Star Wars series isn't based on books. They're films first.
As for Rogue one being a prequel and not carrying on from Episode 7? This way allows them to have a Star Wars movie come out every year.
Yeaaa. This question seems nuts....
I think there is a long tradition of telling stories like this. Think of all the super hero comics that bounce around timelines as different authors try their hand at writing for characters. Sometimes there is just a good story sitting there and someone wants to tell it. Did I need to know about the rebels that found the Death Star plans? Well, no, probably not. But it is cool that they want to tell the story, someone had an idea and wanted to try it out.
I actually get more concerned about things like the Han Solo movie, something that messes with an established character vs characters that were never mentioned in the original movies.
The way I think of it, is that it isn't all one story. There's a Star Wars universe, and there are a bunch of different stories in it. In fact, the less they reuse the same characters, the better.

Yup. That's a list of books, no doubt about it.
Doesn't mean the movies are based off of them, which they absolutely are not. In fact, the only thing it demonstrates is that there are multiple stories to be told in the same universe, not just one.
I may be wrong in that the films haven't been adapted from exhisting books... but either way, if they're going to create new stories just to make a movie, why not continue the story one after another?
Is this a serious question or are you just trolling?
Assuming good faith and poster isn't trolling, it's because Star Wars is a big sprawling universe and Lucas didn't shoot it in order either. And then when he let it go and handed the reins over to Disney (who eliminated about 20 years of canon in the Dark Horse books), they had the prerogative to develop it however they wanted. Made sense to follow cash in on the properties, creating stories set in the universe. People have been enjoying those stories too (all the books, comics, cartoons). They are making stuff for people who would enjoy a Star Wars flick regularly, while still keeping to production schedules and other considerations. Have to say, given the caliber of output so far (but really that's TFA and Rogue so far) it's good quality in the time produced. If they deliver on ep 8, and then the solo han flick, this would keep going.
No .. I wasnt trolling.. I guess I was just wondering why the movies bounce around from before and after movies that were made. A lot of valid points made by those of you who replied to my post. I was lucky enough to have went and seen the original star wars movie in the theaters back when I was 5 yrs old and I've always been a huge fan. There are so many graphic novels and different stories made about the Star wars universe I was just wishing that there was one long continuing story that could be made into sequels. For example like the Harry Potter movies based off a set story . That way they could leave the ending of a movie in a cliff hanger and make me want to see what happens next. Like I said though, there's so many different stories about individual characters and various plot lines that they could very well make dozens of star wars movies that all tie into each other in some kind of running order. It would have been cool to see what Luke Skywalker was gonna do in the next installment of that particular story for the next movie they made.
Well if you just wanted the "official narrative" with no spin-offs, then that's just the G canon, the stuff that was directed by George Lucas. They've retconned the Dark Horse stuff out of continuity. But the new Marvel stuff is in continuity. I do recommend the Marvel Star Wars titles :)
Nice, I'll check it out. Thanks :)
