Prompt 19: Opposites (An Activity)

Alrighty, it's been a madhouse here the past couple couple weeks. Still getting back into the groove of posting new prompts. So... here we go.

This prompt is a bit different. It's process-oriented.

Materials Needed: 2 pieces of paper 1 timer 1 writing instrument

If you usually (note the operational word usually) use one hand to write, this activity will involve two hands.

Have a timer ready. Could be an hourglass, a timer app on the phone or your computer. Whatever it is, have it handy! Set it for ONE MINUTE countdown.

Now, grab a piece of blank paper. Fold it vertically in half so that you have a left side and a right side.

Then, RUN YOUR TIMER and reflect about: What does the word "left" mean to you? On the left side of the piece of paper, write all the words down as fast as you can before the buzzer sounds off.

After your minute is over, reset for another minute countdown. Then move to the right side of the piece of paper.

RUN YOUR TIMER and reflect about: What does the word "right" mean to you? On the right side of the piece of paper, write all the words down as fast as you can before the buzzer sounds off.

Finally, look at all the words on the left and all the words on the right. Imagine that you are an observer watching two people converse from afar. What do you imagine that they are talking about? How do they look from afar? Note their facial expression, their dress, their mannerisms.

Then move a little closer and imagine that you are right there in the thick of things, hearing both sides converse.

On a fresh piece of paper, use your right hand to represent the "right" persona to write down and express itself. After a verse, switch to use your left hand to represent the "left" persona to write down and express itself. Allow both sides to parry back and forth until you feel complete and arrive to some sort of conclusion or settlement or wrap-up.

Then type up the "conversation" you recorded on paper and post your "poem" on this thread!

P.S. Please remember to tag your poem as Prompt 19. For a complete list of prompts, go to the view-only sheet here and click on the appropriate link to participate in a particular prompt.

P.P.S. Since the tagging function still eludes me at the moment, after you post your poem please grab the permalink of your posted poem to this prompt and paste the url as a comment on this thread. Thanks!
