The place for the mysterious, unexplainable, and just weird things around the world.
New Mystery: America's Stonehenge
For those of you in the North East U.S., this mystery is close to home. Mystery Hill is a structure in Salem, New Hampshire, with an as of yet unknown origin. Be it Vikings, Irish monks, Native Americans, or even ancient Phoenicians(!), the purpose and builders of this place are sure to remain shrouded for a long time. What do you think?

Very interesting! I'll be in the area this weekend, maybe I will check it out if I have time. There are a lot of places in New England with uncertain history.. my guess would be that this was built by Native Americans, although it has been established that some groups of Vikings made it here long before other Europeans, so it could be their influence too.
I love that place! I used to insist on going any time we visited my aunt in that area because it is just such a fun mystery. I recommend going on a dreary day as it really heightens the atmosphere of the place. The most interesting part, in my opinion, is the grooves cut into the stones that appear to be for drainage. As a child my cousin insisted that they were cut to direct the flow of blood from sacrifices, but I'm pretty sure it just indicates that the sight was important enough to need in all weather. Knowing that there is evidence of stone age technology being used to quarry some of the stones puts me firmly in the camp who believe it was created by a megalithic native culture.
I'd love to visit someday.
I hope you are able to at some point! It's worth the trip.
