Netflix is ditching five-star ratings in favor of a thumbs up

Netflix vice president of product Todd Yellin said in a briefing today that the video streaming company would be changing its ratings system for the first time in several years, switching from a...

    (1) Well I guess they're going to end up tricking me into watching all those C- horror movies they keep in their catalog. I tend to skip a lot of movies if they have like, one star.

    (2) The personalized match.com approach for my movie choices sounds interesting, though.

    (3) I've always wanted a more detailed rating system. A 10 star or 10 point system would be more accurate in my opinion. With 5 stars, I often wind up choosing between a 60% approval rating and an 80% approval rating, which is such a huge difference.I'm a bit sad they are reducing it a thumbs up/down rating, which lands me in 100% approval rating or 0% approval rating territory. But that's the trend in most places and people seem to like close similarities across media platforms so shrugs. guess that's life.

    What do you think?

Yeah, I agree - I really hate the binary like/dislike system for pretty much any kind of media. There aren't many times where I'm like "I 100% love this thing!" or "This is so bad that I'm going to actively downvote it", so... I guess I'll just end up rating things less? It throws off my system of not watching anything rated lower than three stars, too.

Right? I feel like a more detailed rating system would get me to rate more. Especially on something like film. I'll love the makeup, but hate the editing; I'll feel lukewarm about the cinematography, but I adore the soundtrack, for example. Thumbs up/down does so little for me.😔

Yeah I'm for having a less extreme rating system. They're already somewhat binary with their existing system. Two stars means that you didn't like it and three means you liked it. They completely ignore the "meh" category that very realistically exists.

It's the category that fits the old time-slot/channel model where you'd watch a show not because it was good but because there really wasn't anything good on. You picked the option that was least bad.

For the first time in TV's history we can give meaningful feedback and accurate ratings. Why would you want to cut that back?

Then again, there's the real possibility that they'll use the collected information to make wrong inferences about what I like. I love some good sci-fi but there's a lot that isn't that good. If I down voted every sci-fi show I didn't like, Netflix would probably conclude that I just don't like sci-fi. And they'd be wrong. It's critical too because they actively hide things that they think people not interested in. See, I'm already somewhat afraid to vote.

I'm afraid of that, too. I'll work myself into a corner if I give too many thumbs up or thumbs down for things and soon I'll have nothing to watch. That used to happen to me when I used Pandora for music. They did ok but I wound up listening to the same songs and the sames artists so I wound up not having a need for them anymore.

I do like that they mentioned thry noticed lots of users like foreign movies. I would love to have my choices open up in that regard.

I ask friends what they're watching than going by the pre-star and now the thumbs up/thumbs down change. I find it weird that it's telling me a percentage of how much I would like the show. Some I've watched before Netflix was around and enjoyed it immensely. To which it's telling me I wouldn't. This system is clearly a fail.

Like the article says, it's just about getting more people to rate things. That's all they want.

I think a point that some of us were trying to make, is that it will probably have the opposite effect.
