    It really is amazing what Germany did to atone after the war, and they continue to atone every day by taking in refugees and allowing them to settle in Germany. This is why I think Germans should, at least to some extent, rekindle their patriotism - it's a country that people should be proud of. The same could not be said about their co-belligerent Japan - their political right is chock-full of apologists for their own war crimes.

    I sometimes wonder if winning the war made countries like the US and UK blind to their own faults - that just because they defeated anti-Semitic fascism, they wouldn't be at risk for fascism or anti-Semitism in their own countries. It's oft-forgotten that there was a viable fascist movement in France, the UK, and the US prior to the war, and that those countries don't necessarily have fundamentally different people. The only thing that differed was that Weimar democracy was weaker and more unstable. Brexit was a huge demonstration of that, when British people, in response to increased immigration, decided to backlash and engage in hostilities towards "foreigners" instead of welcoming them.
