"Extreme Transparency" social media company Buffer has made 10 Layoffs, and here's why, in detail
Tough News: We've Made 10 Layoffs. How We Got Here, the Financial Details and How We're Moving Forward - Open
The last 3 weeks have been challenging and emotional for everyone at Buffer. We made the hard decision to lay off 10 team members, 11% of the team. I'd like to share the full details of how we got here, and the way we have chosen to handle this situation to put Buffer in a healthier position.

Interestingly... Their team retreat was going to cost them $400k (just a little less than the $585k cost of keeping the 10 employees on staff)...
Makes you wonder what else they could have saved on in order to keep those people... what if everyone in the company took a slight pay cut?

It's pretty much impossible to get a pay cut through your employees. I know I definitely wouldn't accept one except under extreme duress, and I would make it my #0 priority to get out of there ASAP.
Really? Even if you worked in a company like this one?
I've worked for small startup companies who do cool shit before (indie video game programming specifically). It doesn't matter. If the company is doing poorly enough that they want people to take a pay cut then that's trouble brewing anyway.
Well, part of that trouble was probably thinking it was OK to spend the equivalent of 10 peoples' salaries on a freakin' retreat.
Exactly. Why would I want to work for a company with short sighted management?
Well, they were a *bit optimistic. But then again, they're being optimistic in thinking that a transparent company can work in the real world, to begin with!
