Google Adjusts Algorithm to Remove Holocaust-Denying Results and Other 'Non-Authoritative Information'
After it was widely reported that the first Google search result for "Did the Holocaust happen?" was from Stormfront, a white supremacist website, Google decided to alter its algorithm to remove Holocaust denial sites all together. If you Google "did the Holocaust happen" the first result is a link from Stormfront.org, a neo-Nazi ...

Blacks are still inferior and Muslims are still bad according to Google information authorities.

Well that didnt take long, the top comment on the article is about free speech and censorship. No one is violating anyone's first amendment rights google is just correcting their search results to not display Nazi sites.
Why are they censoring legal content? They're supposed to be a search engine not an SJW. Nazi websites are not child pornography.
Google is an international company and Nazi websites are illegal in Germany. Also denying the holocaust is illegal in multiple other countries. Having the number 1 result be a Nazi website saying the holocaust never happened is the definition of fake news and should be removed from the results.
I see, they made it "illegal" by way of countries that don't have First Amendment free speech rights. Crafty little devils aren't they.
They're not censoring anything. You are still quite capable of typing stormfront on your URL bar and go read the article.
Why do censorship laws in other countries trump US laws against government censorship? Whose laws have legal jurisdiction over others' legal jurisdiction laws?
Google is not the government or a public servant and censorship laws don't apply to them.
In Germany and a few other European nations where Holocaust Denial is a code violation they do.
Because it's illegal for anyone to deny the Holocaust. It just means Google can't serve those articles to people in Germany, not anywhere else.
So mrjazzy got it wrong then.
No, he got it right. Google not being allowed to serve Holocaust denial in Germany doesn't infringe your American first amendment rights. At all.
No, he got it wrong. He applied Holocaust Denial laws in Europe as justification for Google's new search algorithm.
It could be. How would Google obey the law if they didn't have a way to find them?
The first amendment ONLY applies to the government.
Google is not the government. So the first amendment does not apply.
What?
The websites aren't being taken down, and they still come up relatively easily even in a Google search, Google's not even getting rid of them as results completely. The evidence that the Holocaust happened is more verifiable than many historical events, there is no "debate," and search results should reflect that. Google would lose viability as a business if objectively incorrect information came up top for a bunch of searches because people would stop using it and trusting it as a service. If I google "what's the weather today," I should get the actual forecast as a top result, not the thoughts of a civilian who hasn't bothered to look out the window. If I google "when did __ die," the top result should be the date that has been verified by death records and historical data, not somebody's conspiracy theory about how they are still alive.
The problem is that modern white supremacists are relatively internet-savvy and know how appear in search results. They perpetuate misinformation, such as scientifically disproved concepts of race and inaccurate depictions of history. While it's not illegal in the US to put misinformation on the internet, a private company whose business relies on high quality, reliable search results has a responsibility to do something to counter that misinformation showing up as if it is actually reliable. Also, hate speech is frequently treated differently than regular free speech that does not directly harm or incite violence. In most of Europe Holocaust denial is actually illegal because of the dangerous repercussions of perpetuating that myth. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laws_against_Holocaust_denial
Then Google isn't an impartial search engine anymore. They are SJWs.
Google is the most popular search engine by far, and they got there with the original search algorithm, so why change a formula that has proven to be successful?
Google's business model relies on providing results that are accurate. That means that information supported by scientific study and historical records should have more weight and show up more easily than nonsensical conspiracy theorists. Wanting the most accurate information to come up most readily is not evidence of a "social justice" agenda. Facts should be presented as they are. There are videos, photographs, legal documents, architectural records, physical buildings and remains, basically any information you could possibly want to support the fact that the Holocaust happened. Search results should weigh those facts more heavily than they way unsupported claims made solely to support an agenda. This isn't two equal agendas with pros and cons and they picked one, this is 100% of the evidence supports the truth and then there's a small percentage of conspiracy theorist defectors. There's more evidence that the Holocaust happened than there is that world is not flat. Sources claiming it's flat shouldn't come up as the first result.
A search engine is supposed to list information resources based purely upon their popularity, not on what someone believes to be factual. By tweaking the search algorithm to favor one information resource over another, Google is interfering with the free flow of information.
Google, as a private company and service, has no responsibility towards the free flow of (mis)information.
You keep using this term "SJW", do you mind defining it?
Social Justice Warrior.
A better question would be WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE? (edit: considering that this thread is three hours old, I should've said something more like "Why in hell did you hit rock bottom and start to dig?")
Your argument, which is just reduced to name-calling a policy that you don't like, is bullshit. Never mind that whatever argument you had crumbled under What Freedom of Speech Really Means and Other Bits of Logic.
SJW because of a fucking algorithm? Seriously? That's all you got?
You're also caping a little too hard for HATE SPEECH (edit: "Nazi websites," specifically). Might wanna reconsider your stand on that implication alone.
SJW is just a buzzword, it just means "anyone I don't like". Stop using it.
I'm sorry, I don't understand how google, a large multi national company, is collectively a "social justice warrior"? Can you define the term please? Google is a company and not a warrior or soldier or whatever so I'm pretty confused.
A search engine is a tool that returns a list of resources ranked in popularity not a SJW tool for political correctness. I want to stomp on your toes.
With this news the search engine division of Google has changed from being search tool for raw uncensored information to a platform for SJW political correctness. It's no longer an impartial search tool that it's supposed to be.
There's other search engines you can use... like, go for it, dawg.
Thank you for the agreement.
I am not agreeing with you, your comment won my buzzword bingo game in this thread.
Now, if they could work on the racist and anti-Muslim stuff (and so on... ), The Office drawl that'd be great.
Not really. Google is a search engine not a politically correct SJW website.
Okay, we get it ya damn Edgelord.
