Human rights groups vow to challenge burqini ban on Cannes beaches

A French human rights association and Muslim groups have said they will take legal action against the mayor of Cannes for issuing a decree banning burqinis from the resort's beaches. David Lisnard signed off on a ruling last month preventing women from wearing the full-body swimsuits in the Côte d'Azur town.

I freely admit I do not know as much about modesty codes in Islam as I do the modesty codes in Judaism. But I find this absolutely ridiculous. I wore a tichel/mitpachat for a while after I first got married, and I found it far more freeing than not. What? I can just cover my hair and not have to deal with doing anything with it? Really? Hell yeah. (And this was entirely my choice. My ex is blind and didn't care what my hair looked like in or out of the house.)

I would be absolutely pissed off if the government said I couldn't be as modest or immodest as I wanted. There are some really nice modest swimsuits out there. And there are even swim turbans that you can wear. I wonder if those would fit the modesty requirements in Islam the same way they would in Judaism. If they would, I wonder if they would be able to bypass the burquini rules. To me, they don't look religious, but I may be biased.

Of course, I've also found that France doesn't particular like Jewish people advertising Jewishness either.

Europe doesn't have a particularly good track record of racism.

        This is also true.

On a certain level, I "get" that France is (supposedly) trying to be 100% secular but when you start crapping on other religions, especially those with very visible customs, that can't possibly create solidarity.

And who are we to say that say that a woman in a burqini is any more or less repressed than a woman in a bikini?

It seems ridiculous to ban several million people for MODESTY, on the slim, teeny tiny itty bitty chance that they're a Muslim terrorist. Furthermore, if someone WAS dangerous, where in/on a burqini could they hide a weapon? I ask you. This is nothing but fear-mongering and it makes me insane and I'm really glad human rights groups are standing up for the millions of Muslims who are being unfairly targeted.

Preach. The idea that people aren't allowed to cover their bodies as much as they see fit is sickening. It's a problem when governments start demanding that women start covering up and wearing burqas... but isn't it obvious that it's just as much of a problem when governments start dictating that women have to be partially unclothed at the beach?

And it's not even like religion is the only reason someone might want to be more covered up at the beach yet still want to swim. I have yet to find a sunscreen my daughter can wear that she isn't horribly allergic to. Right now she usually wears a wetsuit to the beach, but when she gets older, if she finds something like a burqini more to her liking, I wouldn't stop her.

Questioned by newspaper Nice-Matin, Lisnard, of the centre-right Les Républicains party, said: “I don’t have time for controversies ... I’m simply banning a uniform that is the symbol of Islamist extremism.”

    Fuck this racist POS.

      Seriously.
