  • Europe

(BERLIN) - The Islamic State group claimed responsibility Tuesday for a truck attack on a crowded Berlin Christmas market that German authorities said came right out of the extremist group's playbook, inflicting mass casualties on a soft target fraught with symbolic meaning.

ISIS is the PETA of the terrorism world. A bunch of attention whores. If you asked them, they would claim responsibility for the sinking of the Titanic, McDonald's forgetting the pickles on your hamburger, and Maggie not being able to talk on The Simpsons.

ISIS claimed responsibility for me stubbing my toe this morning too. But you're right terrorist groups claim responsibility for anything if it helps them.

One has to be careful they do not fall into the narrative that ISIS wants to achieve; to pit Muslims against Christians. Yes, the problem needs to be addressed, but religious segregation and pitting this as a clash of civilizations isn't a clean end goal.

Rather, it's a challenge of how to fight against extremism in all forms, whether political or religious. Wahhabism is the offshoot of Islam at play here, and ironically (U.S. ally) Saudi Arabia has had a large part to play in creating the type of environment that has bred such hostility.

So in my view, the way to go about this isn't to isolate societies and to kind of resort to this tribalist sort of view of 'It's us against them' but instead finding ways to build those bridges and be more tolerant, while also taking security seriously, with a competent and meaningful way to handle issues like refugee resettlement and immigration, for example.

Candles are nice to see, but they don't change anything. Aggressive People have been and will be on Earth. The Problem might be Terror or Religion, or both. You can't stop them with words. Separate them.

        Separate aggressive Muslims from Christians.
