Pope Francis says it's better to be an atheist than a greedy Christian

"And so many Christians are like this, and these people scandalize others. How many times have we heard -- all of us, around the neighborhood and elsewhere -- 'but to be a Catholic like that, it's better to be an atheist.' It is that, scandal. You destroy.

I guess what his logic probably is is that it would be better (in his view) to worship no god at all than to worship your money while claiming you worship God.

I'd hate to see his opinion of greedy atheists...

To be serious here. He is talking about people like Creflo Dollar and other prosperity gospel preachers, people who only bring up their religious beliefs when they can discriminate against someone else (Hobby Lobby, bakers who refuse to bake for gay people) and people who claim to be Christian but refuse to help those less fortunate because those people somehow deserve to be poor and suffer.

I do like this Pope much more than previous ones.

    • mrjazzyFeb 23 at 8:30 PM

I agree this pope is a lot better then Senator Palpatine.

    • Data_7Feb 23 at 10:22 PM

Maybe the former, sure, but John Paul II? Debatable.

I personally have no opinion of him as I was not interested in Catholicism at that point - raised Anglican, now Shinto - so while I'm sure he was loved by many I can't say I personally have much to go on!

I wonder how many greedy "Christians" lose their shit over this statement.

    • mrjazzyFeb 23 at 7:53 PM

Well let's see we have already had republicans criticize this pope a few times for what he has said. I am going to guess this latest comment is going to piss off a lot of them and I expect Fox News to complain for a few weeks.

    • zhemaoFeb 23 at 8:53 PM

Eh. Catholics aren't going to criticize him because he's the pope and therefore infallible. Protestants won't care because they aren't Catholic.

      • mrjazzyFeb 23 at 8:58 PM

Congressional Republicans have criticized him and Fox even says he should resign.

      • zhemaoFeb 23 at 10:58 PM

I think it's totally inappropriate that the Pope is weighing in on all the real sensitive, far-left issues.

Ahahaha. Because protecting the environment and equal rights are far-left issues.

You heard it here first, folks. Jesus was a goddamn pinko commie.

      • mrjazzyFeb 23 at 11:29 PM

        He was also brown.

      • TIMDFeb 24 at 7:17 AM

Pope is only infallible when he engages infallibility mode. There is a great if statement here that defines that. Strangely they neglect to mention the bit when he shouts 'I... AM... INFALLIBLE!' at the end
