Star Trek inspired licence plate deemed offensive in Manitoba

Manitoba's public insurance company has revoked a Star Trek inspired custom licence plate after receiving complaints that it's offensive. Nick Troller's two-year-old plate reads "ASIMIL8." Troller keeps it inside a licence plate holder that says: "WE ARE THE BORG. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE."

Additional eyebrow raise for anyone claiming society is "too sensitive" instead of stopping to think, "Oh, I guess I can see how wires could get crossed there." Unfortunate Implications is a trope, after all.

    facepalm

They really need a clearer criteria for when a vanity plate is deemed inappropriate other than "someone might get offended". It's pretty clear from context that this has nothing to do with Canada's forcible assimilation of indigenous groups.

If I happened to come across this license plate but unable to read the smaller text without tailgating or getting real close to it (or closer to it), Star Trek wouldn't be the first thing to come to mind. I'd raise an eyebrow.

Sure, I could see how someone who isn't a Star Trek fan would find it in questionable taste. But at the end of the day, it's a single word on a license plate. Is it really going to ruin someone's day if they happen to see it? I just think there should be some clear standards on what sort of vanity plate is acceptable. It might very well be that this man's license plate fails the test, but at least it wouldn't be so arbitrary. Or they could just totally avoid the problem by not issuing vanity plates at all.
