Despite rising concern among the public, social-media companies have had little success stemming the wave of online harassment. As part of research recently published in the journal Political Behavior , I conducted an experiment on Twitter to find out the best tactics people can use to discourage other users from using harassing language.

Interesting study. Hope it sparks additional research on this topic. I find myself compartmentalizing my online and IRL personas because of difference in communication when talking to someone face to face vs online.

Some questions i think would be interesting to answer.

    • What effect does this have on people of other genders or ethnicity?
    • Is there a lasting effect or will the subject become desensitized to the comments?
    • Will this conditioning translate to their irl comments?

I wonder if there's a difference between the reaction from online "trolls" who only say it online to get some sort of kick (or whatever their reasoning is) and those who would say it in real life as well? Because if you say it irl then I have to wonder if you lack that social conditioning that made it taboo in the first place?
