Trump called Taiwan's president, risking feud with China | Politics | Dallas News

WASHINGTON -- President-elect Donald Trump spoke with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen on the phone Friday, a move that risks opening up a major diplomatic dispute with China before Trump has even taken office. The call from the U.S.

This comes just two weeks after Trump planned to expand his hotel line into Taiwan.

      Pardon my French, but... dafaq?!?

      • mrjazzyDec 02, 2016 at 4:58 PM

He also spoke to Pakistan's PM and caused problems with India. Trump is going to cause some major problems and he isnt even officially president yet.

He is like a bull in a China shop.

        Daaad

Pretty much, he doesnt think about the consequences of his actions or words. We say that with the Carrier deal, he said he wasnt specifically talking about them but everyone took what he said literally. We also see the results with China and Taiwan, Pakistan and India and his DC hotel to point out a few recent issues.

That was my first thought as well, until I read a fascinating Twitter thread analyzing it from the point of view that Trump's apparent foreign policy gaffes are actually deliberate.

      • mrjazzyDec 02, 2016 at 9:06 PM

So he wants to change the system to a deal based system? The only problem with that is there are real world consequences of that position and you have to hope that other countries are ok with that without it starting an international incident.

      • OrdinaryCitizenDec 02, 2016 at 9:11 PM

Yep. This is how trade wars get started.

      • mrjazzyDec 02, 2016 at 9:19 PM

Its also how regular wars get started.

      • OrdinaryCitizenDec 02, 2016 at 9:22 PM

Also true. I think Trump would not necessarily be opposed to starting a war, though he did campaign on the lie that he was against the war in Iraq, so his base might not be totally on board.

      Good catch.

  • zhemaoDec 02, 2016 at 5:23 PM

Unfortunately, this isn't a feud that will be settled on Twitter.

  • ZiggyReachDec 02, 2016 at 10:22 PM

This is going to be four years of blunders and other foreign leaders cleaning up after the POTUS to keep peace.

    • mrjazzyDec 02, 2016 at 10:44 PM

So basically everything the GOP has accused Obama of for the past 8 years? Weakening America's position in the world and hurting our relationship with other countries.

      • ZiggyReachDec 02, 2016 at 10:47 PM

Yes, everything they accused Obama of, except actually happening now. The GOP spent 8 years proudly standing still in the way of congressional progress in the name of party before country. I have no sympathy for what they're about to deal with.

      • mrjazzyDec 02, 2016 at 10:58 PM

I dont either except that it is actually going to hurt a lot of people in the country. The only somewhat good thing is typically in the midterm election the party in power loses control of one or both houses in congress. So they may only have 2 years to really screw things up.

  • z1967Dec 02, 2016 at 6:52 PM

Well fuck. That's all I got. This is basically throwing a handful of lit matches into an oil spill. This can only end badly if he keeps this up.

    • zhemaoDec 02, 2016 at 9:12 PM

Fortunately, I think China's leaders are more level-headed than he is and realize it's not worth it to make a big deal out of this. Which is saying something.
