Raiders traded up for a backup QB to Derek Carr?! Why??

And what are the Browns going to do with all of these draft picks??

Raider Redditors are upset about this move, which they feel is a waste:

I kinda like this move. Connor Cook is a seriously flawed QB if he were to compete for the starting job right now, but is a serviceable 3rd QB for a year while he learns the system to take over for McGloin. As much as I love McGloin, he's a total jobber and has zero upside past what we've already seen.

After a couple of years, you have an extremely valuable trade chip. Keep Carr, trade Cook (or alike). Rinse. Repeat every 3 years until either Carr retires or draft pick is better than Carr.

This is a move that teams with an overabundance of offensive talent do, and it allows them to keep that advantage in the most part for perpetuity. There's a reason why the Packers, Pats, etc. are always in the mix year after year - specifically, young QB are the most highly valued assets in the sport. The Raiders are doing something right if they were able to develop Carr, and if they can equally develop Cook behind Carr you have the ability to trade Cook for a huge haul.

I'm a tried and true Raiders fan, and one old enough to know their glory years. I don't think our younger fanbase realizes that drafting Cook is the type of move that great teams do and isn't a slight on Carr. My theory on what's happening with those upset about what happened is this:

Many of the fans discussing this pick have become fans either during the last 14 years, or not long before it, which skews their view on the team.

First, a persistent negative view of the team has been presented by local media, the team itself, and that viewpoint filtered down into mainstream media as well as a general distaste of the team and its fans.

Al Davis, in his later years was swinging for the fences and hoping to walk off the mortal coil winning in the end. I posit that this is the Al Davis that the fans upset about Cook's draft know best. Senile, short-sighted, swing for the fences Al. This is most unfortunate because it's caused an entire generation of Raiders fans to ignore long-term goals in favor of extreme short-term success. We've seen this with how fervently fans fought to keep Hue, even though it was made obvious he wouldn't work with Reggie Mac..and believe me, Reggie is by far the better catch..the exact opposite of Harbaugh/Baalke.

Fans wanted to run Reggie out of town after a couple of years, even though he's really only had 1 legit bad draft pick so far in Hayden. Watson's been hurt but looked super promising - you certainly can't grade drafts on injury status. Reggie had been out front saying, "The next few years will suck, but we're cleaning the books and that will hurt." Long term thinking was needed, but until the short-term results started coming in this generation of fans mirrored Al's desparation.

As fans, we have to realize that Reggie is making the types of moves that perennial contenders make - the types of moves winning Raiders teams used to make. It's sad that a huge number of our young fans haven't had the experience of rooting for an absolutely dominant Raiders team. Hopefully as this team starts winning we'll start seeing fans calm down and gain a longer term view on the team.

I really appreciate this perspective -- thank you!

No wonder the Niners didn't take Connor Cook. They are in a total rebuild mode so developing a QB is not a priority there.

The Raiders ARE looking like they're drafting to win. It's good to see them looking like contenders. Amari/Carr F yeah!

Actually serious question: Do you think Carr will have a tougher time this year now that defense's have lots of tape on him?
