The Latest NX Rumors from Reddit (and Boogie's Thoughts)
[Leak] Goodies from a large retail partner * /r/NintendoNX
Wait, what's happening? So as some of you know, we have this little blurb in the sidebar. >If you have sensitive or privileged information you...
I feel like it's sort of obligatory that our community has a place to discuss the latest NX rumors (and I've been on a bit of a tear mentioning NX tonight), so here we have the latest "verified" leaks from Reddit. Now, keep in mind, "verified" -- to the best of my understanding -- just means that Reddit's NX community moderator has somehow confirmed that the person from whom the info comes might actually be in a position to provide such information. It, of course, does not mean that the rumors themselves are verified.
These particular rumors are apparently retailer-derived, so that's the lens we're looking through, here. You've got the full link to check out, but here are some bullets:
--Strong focus on Mario in the launch marketing
--Mario title at launch
--$299 MSRP for the base bundle
--Blue and white color scheme for packaging
--4K streaming enabled
--1080p/60fps are big marketing bullet points
--Games available on cartridges
Personally, I don't take too much stock in this set of rumors. Some of them of are just too safe (a Mario title at launch for a Nintendo platform -- earth-shattering), and other bits of data seem off-base. Even if many NX games regularly achieve 1080p resolutions and 60fps framerates, Nintendo almost never focuses on technological acheivements in their marketing. The blue-and-white color scheme is also a big red flag. And I use that term intentionally, because Nintendo has clearly been transitioning into a red-and-white color scheme for virtually all of their marketing materials across all major territories. Kimishima has already confirmed that NX is not the next iteration of the Wii; the blue-and-white scheme is synonymous with the Wii branding, and it's almost certain Nintendo will be moving away from that.
Moving on to more Reddit rumors, Stephen Williams (a.k.a. Boogie2988, a.k.a. YouTube's Francis) has detailed his beliefs on what the NX will be, based on recent rumblings from Retropalooza. I feel as though, given Williams' prominence as an industry commentator, his views are just as worthy of taking a look at as a "verified" Reddit rumor. So have at them. In short, Boogie -- based on previous speculation and rumors from his own sources -- expects something like this from the NX:
--Slightly higher specced than the Xbox One
--Games at 900p/60fps
--Hybrid format with additional processing power from a TV "dock"
--Easy to code for
--Unsure of whether or not the handheld format will play downscaled versions of full games or mobile-style, "companion app" type games (or if this will be up to individual devs)
To me, this sounds a bit like your average video game enthusiast's idealized take on what the NX might be -- I like the sound of it, but I expect Nintendo to defy expectations (for better or worse).
Your thoughts on the latest crop of neverending NX rumors?
