Sushi Restaurant Under Fire For 'Wasabi Terrorism' And 'Hate Crimes'
A Japanese sushi chain is being called out for seasoning-linked "terrorism" and "hate crimes" against foreign customers. Fujii Shokuhin Co., which manages the Ichibazushi sushi chain in Ibaraki, Osaka, apologized Sunday for the actions of its franchise.
This is relatively old news, but I didn't find out about it until now. A sushi restaurant chain in Osaka was accused of hate crimes for serving excessive amounts of wasabi to foreign (mainly Chinese and Korean) customers. The restaurant's management has apologized, but stated that the policy did not have discriminatory intent, and was simply because foreigners tend to request extra wasabi.

I love wasabi.
Also: Is this really an act of terrorism?
As someone who hates wasabi. Yes, yes it is.
😂😂😂 No!
As someone with a low tolerance for horseradish, unexpectedly excessive amounts of horseradish would be tantamount to assault. I can see why people would be mad, even though this is pretty funny.
This is a perfect article for this community. I definitely laughed, though I shall retract that laughter should it prove the intention was indeed malicious.
I can legit see this being intentional but not intentionally racist, in that innocently ignorant "oh but I thought all foreigners did that!" casual everyday racism. With that said I'd be curious to try it out just to see how potent the wasabi really is, lol.
Also, does that mean their fish isn't actually that delicious, since they feel they have to overkill it with wasabi?
Edit: I looked into it more, and yikes that's a lot of wasabi
I think you accidentally double-posted. You might want to delete the other one.
But yeah, the report did say "excessive and inedible". Korean and (some) Chinese cuisine do tend to be spicier than Japanese cuisine, so I could see where the stereotype comes from. But wasabi is a different kind of spice than chili pepper.
Thanks for that, I got an error when I tried to comment but apparently imzy is drunk.
Husband says Japanese people do also commonly request extra wasabi so doing it automatically just for the "dirty forners" doesn't make sense on that level either.
Damn, it is so hard to find asian food that is actually spicy here that tastes good. Its either really weak and no spicy at all or just hot with no flavor. If I could find a place that made good spicy food I would order from there all the time. Can they open a restaurant in the US please?
You can just get extra wasabi you know? Well actually you can't, because the "wasabi" they sell in the west is just colored horseradish paste, but still.
Yeah, my friend complained about that He was like, "It tastes different here, I don't know why." Guess you solved the mystery for us.
I dont just mean Japanese food, its the same for Chinese or Thai food. They dont make it too spicy because most Americans dont like food hot. Even if you ask for it extra spicy its still pretty weak. The one time I actually got food spicy was because the cook was mad the cashier messed up my order but i have not been able to get anything that spicy and good since that one time. :-(
Yeah, I know. I live in California, and all my white friends complain about not being able to get spicy enough food. Have you tried going to a Sichuanese restaurant? They usually make it pretty spicy (a bit too spicy for me).
I gotta laugh at this one. Walking in to a place where this is possible damn near begs a story like this eventually happening. And then my next inclination is to laugh even harder, because once this story comes out, further troubles are either from the uninformed, the incurious, or masochists looking for pain. It's not really a hate crime, it's more of a kind of kinky love crime.
And that's something new, where food, porn, and masochism meet.
"It looks like a white frosting." - "It is not white frosting." - "I'll have a piece."
LOL. And if this is otherwise? Eh, Schadenfreude?
