I feel like we are at a turning point in the story now! Jack and Bitty are gelling and you can see how much Bitty cares for Jack by his reaction to the sports assholes on tv but I like what @darrenburr said about how bitty can help with Jacks anxiety but not cute it because that's showing even in those last panels where I think Jack is reacting differently at this point in the story than he may have at the beginning of the story

    • still_lostSep 12, 2016 at 4:49 PM

Agreed! Isn't this the first time Bitty gushes over Jack, as opposed to complaining about waking early on Sunday or about Jack's stupid face?

      • elzabobSep 12, 2016 at 7:33 PM

        I think so

THE HUG. THE SITTING NEXT TO EACH OTHER. THEY'RE PROGRESSING.

The sportscasters can suck it tbh I get so mad...but look at how Jack and Bitty both get SAD...their reaction is heartbreak, Jack for himself and Bitty for Jack. I think that's hugely important. Bitty absolutely has moments of anger, but when it comes to attacks on Jack he feels hurt first...which to me shows how well suited he is for Jack. I imagine Parse was all heat and intensity and would have gotten mad, which is exactly what Jack wouldn't need. Anger in some ways can justify what the other side is saying, and Jack, mentally ill and trying to live up to impossible standards, doesn't need to feel as though people are angry on his behalf--he needs to feel that there's someone who can understand how he feels and who's there with him. Shitty's an amazing friend for Jack because he puts his head on straight, but romantically it would be so hard to keep being told how to feel: when someone's angry on your behalf they say things like the boys do here: call them an asshole and tell you to move on, Bitty says "they're wrong" and is trying directly to deal with what Jack is feeling. He tries to prevent Jack from internalizing it rather than being outwardly emphatic about what was said...idk maybe I'm drawing too fine of a distinction, but I just feel like there's something to the way that Bitty responds to Jack that always comes from a place of empathy and compassion rather than reactivity which is essential for Jack and for Jack's anxiety. I'm not saying that Bitty is curative in any way for Jack's anxiety, but my point is that there are some partners who are really just better suited for people with mental illness because the way they react is different and doesn't exacerbate the issue.

Also, I really hate how the sportscasters are not only monday morning quarterbacking but are like multiple-years-later quarterbacking...like Jack made his decision so long ago and you're undermining it now? And in the context of him being wildly successful? Ugh.

I love how you breakdown the way in which Bitty can be good for Jack but without being a cure for Jack. I think we can be a little bit guilty sometimes of kinda hand-wavy, love fixes all, magical healing cock (in all fandoms and ships and not just cock, really) so it's nice to keep some perspective.

      • darrenburrSep 12, 2016 at 12:20 PM

I think especially in fic I see a lot of people seeing Bitty as curing Jack's anxiety...which he can't. He can be an amazing treatment for it in some ways at some times, but he's definitely not a replacement for formal treatments like therapy and medication. And of course we WANT him to be able to be that, so a lot of times we write it that way because it would be amazing if love could really stop Jack from ever dealing with that. As someone who deals with mental illness I've TOTALLY written those wish fulfillment fics in other fandoms (I've never written in this fandom) and they can be really great but also miss the boat in a lot of ways. Bitty's love for Jack doesn't have to heal him to be healing.

What happened between 'Jack's stupid face hates me' and now 'Jack is so spectacular and hugs me and now we're in the playoffs??'

That's an incredible depiction of a sportscast, the visuals and the dialogue, I feel like I'm watching Sportscenter.

Jack's face in that second-to-last panel breaks my heart. Ugh. Imagine trying so hard to come back, succeeding spectacularly, and still having all that mess from the past brought back up all time. Redemption is virtually impossible.

    • crwilleySep 12, 2016 at 11:36 AM

This might be another sign that Bitty was totally misinterpreting Jack's face in that one panel. Or else things eased between them on a personal level as they discovered that they had really good chemistry as teammates on the ice. (Also I suspect Zimmermann hugs are very nice hugs even with all the hockey padding in the way.)

and, yeah, that one panel. my feels. still recovering. Shitty looks like he'd gladly strangle that announcer with his own necktie.

But before that - Jack has a beer. Ransom and Holster, back in the fall, were not reliable sources of information about Jack. The existence of the "Zimmermann puck bunnies" is now entirely suspect.

      • still_lostSep 12, 2016 at 11:55 AM

You're dead on about Rans and Holster. I think Jack, generally, is a little too stiff and awkward to really fit in easily with the R&H Good Times Lifestyle and so they've kind of made assumptions about why that is. I think Holster moreso than Ransom.

You're right, Bitty was totally wrong about Jack's stupid face! That expression was the beginning of Jack knowing first, or at least of Jack realizing this could probably be a pretty good thing if he opened himself up to it. I imagine opening himself up to anything is pretty difficult for Jack, so you've got to give him props for going with this whole thing.

      • darrenburrSep 12, 2016 at 6:53 PM

Straight up I think R&H just see Jack as beeing so freaking cool that of course the reason he isn't partying with them or whatever is because he has something better happening...it's a matter of hero worship. They see him as being this god among men in so many ways that they don't realize that what they're missing is that Jack's lifestyle is probably way less cool/awesome than theirs and is in reality much more subdued.

      • crwilleySep 12, 2016 at 6:57 PM

or else the other way around: "he thinks he's too cool for us." Holster seemed a little put off that Jack wasn't at their party.

      • still_lostSep 12, 2016 at 7:04 PM

Yeah, I don't really see Holster as Jack's biggest fan, at least not early on.

Rans seems a little more sympathetic to him.

      • darrenburrSep 12, 2016 at 8:12 PM

Ok fair, but like I see it as a mixture of like "he's actually so cool" and "why doesn't he like us" especially on Holster's part. I ALSOOOOOOOOOOO headcanon that Holster had a thing for Jack at one point and this could be part of his way of dealing with those past feelings (but that's just me hahahahahha)

      • still_lostSep 13, 2016 at 4:21 AM

I could be down with that. Holster is a mystery wrapped in an enigma!
