My name is Andréa, I am an autistic trans woman living in France, and I draw comics about my experiences.
The ABC of Stimming

Let me kick off this Imzy thing with probably my best known serie, The ABC of Stimming!
About the project
Stimming, short for self stimulating, also known as stereotypy, is a repetitive body movement or vocalization commonly associated with autism.
Closely related to difficulties with sensory processing, it help us channel fear, anxiety or anger, as well as more positive emotions like excitation, joy or even love. It is a means of emotional expression.
In this illustrated ABC of Stimming, I chose to focus on the positive stims in an attempt to provide us, our caretakers, our family and our friends with a simple tool to help recognize and understand stimming.
As you will realize through this little compilation, nothing here is specific to autistics, and stimming can take many different forms. Some are just considered more socially appropriate than hand flapping or rocking, like pacing, nail biting or whistling.
Stimming is also a wonderful way for autistics to express the feelings we have such a hard time putting to words with each other. It is a communication tool, just like neurotypical body language and facial expressions are.
I hope you will enjoy this book and that it will help you understand yourself or your autistic friends and family members better.

I found your art through a reblog of "Lining things up" on tumblr. I love turtles and lining things up. :)
My sister and I used to use our duplo to build walls, and then take them down, and then build walls again. I actually don't remember that I understood that you were supposed to make anything with duplo, and I never got into lego, because I couldn't make big walls with it.
Aw, thank you so much for sharing! I remember being told I had a weird way of playing Lego, but I basically just dismantled things my family members made, so I don't know what to think about it :D
This is awesome I really loved it! Did you draw/write it yourself?
Thank you :) Yes, I did both!
Very nice - I love your art style!!
You should totally post this to /neurodiversity and /actuallyautistic if you haven't already ☺
That's nice of you to say! Good idea! I might do that at some point, but I'm gonna try to get the hang of imzy first! XD
