Moving to Philly next year
Hello! I'm moving to Philly in early 2017 (from Hawaii so I'll barely notice a difference, right?) and I'm wondering what some of your favorite neighborhoods are and why.
Also, what do you like/hate most about Philly?
Thanks for any input!

My personal favorite neighborhoods are East Passyunk, Bella Vista/Italian Market, Fishtown, Fairmount, and University City.
WEST PHILLY BEST PHILLY.
I like that you always know where you stand in Philly. I like that it's a walkable, medium-size, medium-density city and that we have such an exploding, creative food scene.
I dislike that as a city it's rude and dirty, but these are City Gripes and not necessarily Philly ones.
West Philly is absolutely fantastic, but I would argue that South Philly has more of the essential Philly Experience™. You can't beat the music scene in North Philly though. My next door neighbor's basement is a venue, and last month they had a band in from Detroit.
As for the rudeness and dirtiness, I feel like it's important to mention that:
When my disabilities let me get out of the house, I spend most of my time in the Gayborhood. I think the reasoning on that one should be fairly obvious.
Thanks for the feedback so far! I was visiting last week checking out some areas and I think West Philly could be a nice fit for me. I was staying in Fishtown but I'd prefer to live somewhere that's more green and has a little more residential feel to it. I also plan on having a car and I don't want to stress about parking too much.
I was gonna say, South Philly is kind of the defining Philly, but there are hardly any trees, and the parking is AWFUL. I've lived in West Philly since I moved to Philadelphia eight years ago.
love love love the food. and i personally love south philly. i feel like it's still blue collar there, and people keep it real. also i love jim's steaks over others and wawa coffee over starbucks. <3
I'm in Brewerytown - lots of new businesses coming in (as well as a few closing). Good public transport links (7, 48 & 32 buses, 15 trolley), nearby Aldi for groceries and a few independent food outlets. Close enough to Fairmount but with cheaper rents. Also, very close to the zoo.
I've been hearing good things about Brewerytown; glad to hear it. I lived behind the Art Museum between 2001-2005. Anything north of Girard was considered dangerous. I typically didn't go farther than the North Star to be honest.
