Starter Camera
Greetings,
I am currently looking to purchase a DSLR camera, and I think I have settled on a Canon EOS T5 (or maybe a T5i, I haven't decided yet). I have used a 35mm since I took a photography class a number of years ago, and while I love film and the developing process, I want to move past the 35mm (and my iphone camera, haha). I was wondering if anyone had experience with a T5/T5i and if you all had any other recommendations. The reason I am looking at this camera is its more affordable price for a grad student, relatively simple interface, and positive reviews for a "beginner" camera. Any thoughts are really appreciated!
Thanks!

I have used the t2i, which is largely the same minus the screen and some video features.
Depending on what your goals and experience is you could probably buy and older camera and not miss all that much from the latest. The difference between the t2i and the t5i isn't massive (canon hasn't largely changed the sensors or abilities of the camera in the last several years).
The t5i is a fine camera though, you won't go wrong with it and it has a pretty long range in terms of experience, skill, and results.
I would go with T5i since you get a bit more with it. One of the big features is the pop-out LCD screen which you can twist and swivel. It’s also touch-enabled, so you can tap the screen in order to navigate. The nicest feature of the T5i in my mind is physical video mode switch while on the T5 the video mode is accessed via the mode dial.
Now let's talk kits. The T5i comes with an EF-S 18-135mm lens with image stabilisation. It's a much better lens than the 18-55mm that comes with the T5, both in terms of the build quality and image quality.
The last thing I want to mention is model number. Canon T5 is known as 1200D and Canon T5i is known as 700D. If you take a look at Canon's line up of products you will notice that lower number refers to a better more professional model.
I hope it helps 😄
That was my main debate (if the extra money was worth the features). It sounds like it is though, from your comments.
Thanks so much for the input!
Another side question -- do you have any recommednations for places to purchase cameras? I am currently looking on Amazon, but I'm not really fluent with product sites.
I usually buy my photo gear on Amazon, Adorama or BH Photo Video. Amazon is my first choice only because return policy is so much easier and customer friendlier.
