What I like here is the density, as seen in the first shot. American cities are not this dense. You'd think NYC would be more dense than Paris, but it is not. Of course, all of these European cities were well-established for hundreds of years or more before the car and there is less urban sprawl.
I lived my youth in Bern, it was just a short visit :)
Bern has a long history and surrounded by the River Aare, you're right, with all the quarrels it was easyer to defend when built in a dense way.
I live in the so called Seeland, 3 lake region, in Biel-Bienne, the perfect bilingual city. 60% German and 40% French speaking.
beautiful clock tower
Cool shots. I really like the second shot of all the rooftops. Can't wait to see what you put up in the summer tour.
Most "roof gardens" are connected, so we walked quite the whole line up and down :)
I was in a hurry, in summer time i will take you around the city :))

Is this where you live?

People also had to be within walking distance to work. :-)
I look forward to seeing Bern in the summer.
The working people lived around the city, and they had horses :)))
