Photography is for everyone! Build skills in a fun and diverse community.
Dispelling a nasty "rumor"
People generally make two assumptions about photopigs. It’s not serious enough and too fluffy, and “I’m not good enough to contribute.” The second one is particularly bothersome.
photopigs is a photography-based general community.
This means everyone should freely post content. Ability, skill level and access to equipment do not matter. The only stipulation is that posts have to be based in photography. The final product started with a photograph, or is about photography itself. Generate whatever kind of discussion you desire - chit chat, technical details, questions, advice - because while photopigs is a place to learn photography it is not terribly serious about it.
However, that doesn’t mean that photopigs is only about pretty pictures and fluff pieces. Based on what photopigs has done on other platforms, there are three additional needs that warrant separate communities with special focus.
- Digital processing. Lessons, questions, art creation, advice, techniques, etc. for Lightroom, Photoshop, Gimp, etc.
- photopigs “magazine”, high-quality content. Restricted community and subscription service.
- The “newsroom”. Private community for generating the magazine’s content, general writing exercises and feedback, editing, etc.
photopigs, then, is a gateway to photography and jumping point to the related more-focused communities. It is a diverse environment that represents the many different aspects of photography with the hope that it inspires others to explore photography, digital art, writing, journalism, photojournalism and, of course, these specialized communities.

You guys know me. I love talking reading, talking about and taking photos. When it gets to cold to take photos I start playing in photoshop. The more I do, the more I learn and the more I learn the more I want to do. I do feel "budget challenged" so...
Thanks for this! I love what you guys are doing here.
We've been discussing the possibility of subscription/paid content. If that's something you'd be interested in doing that here, let me know and we can talk about what your needs are and what we are thinking now. The feedback would be super helpful to us : )
w00t, it's nice to see you here, Jessica!
In the interest of full disclosure, photopigs started out as only a photography-based general community, and when the idea of these specialized communities was introduced, part of the community said, "you're saying that what I'm doing now is not good enough" and it created a fracture, so it was effectively quashed these goals there. The platform was also ad-supported.
This article is the lightbulb going off in my head that imzy could totally support it. So, yes, I totally want to have this discussion, but may not be entirely sure about immediate needs.
Awesome! There are some things already on the roadmap that should cover some of your needs but we should definitely chat. I'm going to be away for a few days so it might not happen until early next week.
We can always talk as you figure out more things that you need too. It doesn't have to be a one-off conversation. We're happy to work with you on it over time : )
Sounds like a plan. I've been re-thinking my model, and will probably gather feedback from some of the people that previously showed interest in providing this type of content.
Thanks for the support. I don't think it's something that will be figured out right away, and imzy will definitely want to make sure to set good precedents for the future.
Spot on, and heart warming. Here's a free sunset wallpaper, because we need to enjoy photography together.
Great clarification and one I hope everyone takes to heart. Photography, more than anything else, should be fun. When you start with fun, inspiration and creativity follow.
