The most helpful thing you can do would be sit down with the manual and go through all of the cameras functions, then flip that baby into manual and force the habit. :-)
I learned Manual mode by looking at shots I did that turned out pretty well in Program. I then moved up to Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority depending on what shot I thought I'd need. Finally someone more experienced told me if I'm outdoors (I'm almost always shooting outdoors) and in Manual - start at f11 and move up or down from there. It took me months to figure out how to use aperture properly. Now I'm trying to work on better focus.
You know, I should try this or something similar. Set up one shot and go through the options: take a pic in all the modes and then see how I do. Mainly I need to just fiddle with it more. :)
I tend to shoot P mode most of the time, partly because I tend to be an opportunistic photographer who shoots what presents itself rather than spending a lot of time setting up shots and partly because my vision ain't as great as it used to be so I often rely more on auto-focus. But I do like the flexibility to set ISO minimums and maximums and things like that.
I flop between Program and Guide (but with adjustments). I really need to learn more about my camera :P

UGH! That's about as dry as eating sand in a desert. Yes, I know I need to do it, but I'll WHINE while doing so. Just sayin' :D
Having some WINE with your WHINE will help the process quite a bit. ;-)

Good focus eludes me a lot of the time. Damn eyesight!
Yes, eyesight is most of my problem too.
This might be a better approach : www.digitalphotomentor.com/photography-challenge-use-your-camera-daily/
Somehow, I have a feeling things will go hilariously wrong :D
That's me as well. I'm not sure if the shot is out of focus or if my glasses are smeared or just need replacing :P
I'll give this a look!

It took me a whole year to figure out I had a light meter and what it was telling me.
