North Carolina is no longer classified as a democracy

North Carolina is no longer classified as a democracy

In the just released EIP report, North Carolina's overall electoral integrity score of 58/100 for the 2016 election places us alongside authoritarian states and pseudo-democracies like Cuba, Indonesia and Sierra Leone.

North Carolina's score was on par with Cuba, Sierra Leone and Indonesia.

    Clickbait title

Removing power from the incoming Governor and making sure your party still is in power doesnt seem like something that happens in a democracy. Also writing voter id laws designed to prevent minorities from voting doesnt seem like something that happens in a democracy either. The title seems pretty accurate to me.

Is it really as bad as Cuba or Sierra Leone though? You mentioned two things, one of which is plain-old corruption and one which has been part of the conservative agenda for ages, neither of which puts us at the level of Cuba or Sierra Leone.

From what wikipedia says voters in Cuba have an easier time voting for local and municipal elections, they just dont get much say in Presidential elections right now. So just based on that and comparing it to the state of North Carolina with their voter id laws designed to prevent certain groups from voting Cuba seems a little better.

What does clickbait mean? This is not misleading or fake news. You may disagree with the method of the study, the metrics that were used as inputs, or the results. That does not mean the study was performed in bad faith or that the article is twisting the results.

North Carolina has been notorious for undermining minority voter rights. They have done things in the past that are completely undemocratic. Such as violently removing democratically elected officials and replacing them with officials who will suppress the rights of minorities.
