Are hot dogs sandwiches?

I, the actual Earl of Sandwich, declare them not to be sandwiches.
Woo, the Earl of Sandwich agrees!
I know all.
About sandwiches.
Thank you Earl for confirming this :D
Let's keep it civil, lol.
I can feel the tensions building already (for me at least :P).
someone insulted biscuits, as a Brit I was honour bound to respond XD
In the UK sandwiches are only made with two slices of bread, hot dog buns and sub rolls are not sandwiches.
The UK calls their cookies biscuits. Their culinary lingo is suspect =D
cookies and biscuits are very different things :P
Biscuit:
Cookie:
You don't dip a cookie in your tea for a start!
These are biscuits
You just posted two cookies. One of which I might enjoy dunked in tea and another I would dunk in milk, but they are still both cookies =)
But enough about cookies vs biscuits this thread is supposed to be about hot dogs!
those are scones
Scones are hard and crunchy. Biscuits are soft and tasty.
you're making your scones wrong if they are hard and crunchy
biscuits are hard and crunchy
cookies are soft and chewy
Are your scones soft and chewy? "Crunchy" might be the wrong word, but they are definitely hard. If I press down on it maybe something breaks off but it doesn't squish or anything and if I bite in a whole piece will fall off. Its more like toast than bread.
Where as a proper biscuit is light and pillowy and delicious
Biscuit means "twice cooked"! How many times do you bake your cookies, huh????
It's true, scones are traditionally soft and crumbly!
O.o the idea of a hard scone is making me unreasonably uncomfortable.
Is the hot dog like... the platypus of sandwiches? (Sandweches? Sandwi?)
The first time this was proposed to me I was firmly in the "no of course not" category.
However, it is hard to establish a world where a meatball sub is a sandwich and a hot dog is not. And given that sub is short for submarine sandwhich, the pro "hot dogs are sandwhiches" crowd does have a fairly good point.
On the other hand, its clearly a hot dog and not a sandwhich
And thus the debate rages to this day
Subs are sandwiches because they can be made with the bread completely sliced in two.
Meatball "subs" aren't really subs.
At best, a hot dog is an open-faced "sandwich", but that's not really a sandwich.
So if you're eating a hot dog and the bun tears, is it suddenly a sandwhich? That seems awfully arbitrary. My food shouldn't transform into a sandwhich during the process of me eating it.
There are many things in the universe which cannot be adequately explained. The big bang of sandwich transformation is one of them.
I say no, because a hot dog is not a sausage between two slices of bread but rather a sausage stuck into a single bun that was not fully cut.
Unless you're Egyptian (or part Egyptian like me), in which case you wrap the sausage with pita bread. Just like Tayta makes them. In that case, we enter an entirely new dimension.
So an open-faced sandwhich is not a sandwhich despite sandwhich being in the name?
Yes. An open-faced sandwich is NOT a sandwich.
Kinda like how chickpeas aren't peas.
Exactly, it's a misnomer. Just like Mountain Goats are not goats, but more closely related to deer and antelopes.
mountain goats aren't goats?? My whole life is a lie...
But a chickpea isn't a pea that is a chick. An open-faced sandwhich is a sandwhich that is open-faced. But that requires it to be a sandwhich.
If open-faced sandwiches are actually sandwiches, pizza bagels are sandwiches.
Are you comfortable with that reality?
I have had to face many harsh truths about reality in this past week.
Pizza bagels being sandwhiches will just have to be another one of them.
Wikipedia says:
Hot dogs are kind of a sausage on AND between bread, therefore they're twice as sandwichy as what we think of as a sandwich.
*nods* Good day.
slices of bread
But the bread is sliced down the middle, no?
Maybe that's not a slice. D: I might have to update my worldview???
slices from a loaf of bread, not simply cut in half
Hmmmm, okay maybe. *grumbles*
If you read further down the wiki page you'll see that there was a court ruling in the US that said basically anything could be a sandwich, but in the UK we still use the old definition of two slices of bread from a loaf with stuff between.
Wow weird, but okay! If there is legal precedent... ;)
Now you know why we are the way that we are.
Still waiting on the court to come out with the verdict on whether or not people who call cereal soup are mentally sane.
I was going to say, that's silly cos soup is hot and then I remembered gazpacho soup XD
@tickybox gets it. SLICES of bread.
Not to be a conversation terrorist, but what the hell is a Gyro then?
In Australia we serve sausages on slices of sandwich bread. We also serve these sausage sangers free at our voting stations on Election Day, in this land of compulsory voting, where it is then referred to as 'democracy sausage'.
Merika, if you offered free democracy sausage at all your polling places you'd get a fabulous turnout. I kid you not.
Nope a sandwich has to be completely enclosed
Best poll ever.
