Do you believe that it's ultimately unjust to tell people that they aren't permitted to enjoy certain things out of loyalty to a group they're a part of by chance (rather than by choice)?

It's racist to believe that everyone of a particular race must think alike. Everyone has a mind of their own regardless of their race.

      Very true! <3

tfw you clicked "no" because you misread the question :')

I suppose that you could tell someone that they aren't allowed to enjoy something. But then they could tell you that they don't intend to listen to you and will continue to enjoy the thing that you don't think they should be allowed to enjoy. This will probably put you into a bit of a awkward spot.

That's a good point, too. I mean, who even puts people in charge of gate-keeping whether or not people are being "true" to a group they happened to be born into - and really had no choice in the matter.

      • BaxterSpotlightSep 10, 2016 at 3:32 PM

No one put anyone in charge of course. In present discourse there is an appeal to shame so that people fall in line. Anyone that's lived long enough probably knows that it's just a fad and that like with so many other things the pendulum will swing back the other direction.

      • blues_sevenfoldSep 10, 2016 at 3:33 PM

Those are some good points, as well.

  • AnonLaboratoriesAislingSep 10, 2016 at 2:43 PM

    I don't understand the question.

    • blues_sevenfoldSep 10, 2016 at 2:55 PM

Example: What would you thinking of telling someone that they aren't permitted to enjoy a certain kind of music because of the ethnic/racial group that they belong to? Essentially insinuating that, in order to not be accused of committing "treason", loyalty to your ethnic/racial group requires sacrificing your personal enjoyment of a particular kind of music - no matter how much you might desperately wish to have the liberty to freely enjoy that particular kind of music.

      • AnonLaboratoriesAislingSep 10, 2016 at 3:07 PM

        I don't think that's actually a thing?

      • blues_sevenfoldSep 10, 2016 at 3:30 PM

Well, I've seen and heard plenty of POC talk about how they were accused of "acting white" simply for liking rock music - which doesn't even make sense, since it was black people who invented rock music. But, even if that wasn't the case, people have a right to enjoy whatever music they damn well please.

  • AnonCoinsJoannaSep 10, 2016 at 2:32 PM

This is way too complicated to be answered in the abstract. It is necessary to consider the forms of oppression involved in a given situation, but even then it is sometimes still too nuanced for a simple "yes definitely do that" or "no never do that".

    • blues_sevenfoldSep 10, 2016 at 2:35 PM

One example that comes to mind is telling POC that they aren't permitted to enjoy rock music. It's particularly egregious in the case of telling black people that, since it was black people who invented rock music in the first place - along with its immediate predecessor, blues music.

      • AnonCoinsJoannaSep 10, 2016 at 2:42 PM

I mean I'd always only urge people to refrain from enjoying something if they 1. would be acting from a position of relative privilege over the other group and 2. their actions would be likely to harm the other group / uphold the oppressive structure (as opposed to those situations where it's good and harmless and helpful).
