LGBT Teens: Shunned, Alone, and On the Streets

LGBT Teens: Shunned, Alone, and On the Streets

Sometimes kids can be so cruel. "You're a disgusting abomination. You make me want to vomit in my mouth. I should have the right to kill you. Go to hell," an adolescent boy said in class. He was talking to Tessa, a young trans woman.

This simultaneously breaks my heart, enrages me, and fills me with hope. I'm heartbroken and furious that so many queer teens are rejected, but inspired by the efforts made to give them safe spaces. There's an ENORMOUS need for those safe spaces here in the Salt Lake City area, where there are TONS of Mormon LGBT youth out on the streets. The group Mama Dragons recently purchased a house in Provo that will serve as a safe space called The Encircle Center, where LGBTQ teens can be housed, fed, and given other resources they need.
