Maybe it's because I live in NY, but this is far from a secret. This kind of thing came up very often for me because I had zero help from my parents and had to work ridiculously hard to put myself through school and survive. People asking why I couldn't hang out or hit the bars often found themselves in conversations discussing why their lifestyle isn't everyone's lifestyle.
I had some roommates in college like this. One girl was the "house manager" and in charge of collecting rent and utilities for the landlord who wanted it all on one check. No big deal, except she would routinely ask for rent ten days early. Having to explain why I wouldn't have it until the first every month was exhausting. She didn't get it.
