She lived with us for 56 years. She raised me and my siblings without pay. I was 11, a typical American kid, before I realized who she was. Alex Tizon passed away in March. He was a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and the author of Big Little Man: In Search of My Asian Self.

An interesting story, with some issues that this Twitter thread explores better than I could.
I don't think you can read this article and think the author's mother wasn't a terrible person. I'm not so ready to extend that judgement to the author himself, though. He clearly felt a lot of guilt over how Lola was treated and tried to make it up to her after his mother died. Obviously doesn't absolve him of not really doing much to help her when his mother was still alive. But it's a complicated situation to be in, and I doubt most people would handle it any better.
Very true. I don't think I'd do any better than the son unless I consulted someone more knowledgeable beforehand which, to be fair, isn't something that would occur to everyone.
that is really important, thank you.
This was quite horrific to read. I feel sick to my stomach.
