The Ongoing Outcry Against the Ghostbusters Remake

The Outcry Against the All-Female 'Ghostbusters' Remake Gets Louder

Granted, there's a lot of criticism based on sexism aimed at this movie. But I feel there are also valid criticisms midst all the hate and misguided opinions.

Objectively, I don't think that the VFX look very good. Like, at all. Sure it COULD just be a horrible trailer, but I don't really think so. The recent trend of reviving dead franchises certainly started fairly sincere. But there is no question, that when a company sees a chance to easily monetize something, they'll do it with no hesitation.

When it comes to bad VFX, there are many types of them. The old Starship Troopers are some of my favourite movies that I watch from time to time, but they're a special kind of bad. It's like tomato juice, so bad it feels kinda good. But this? This isn't anywhere in that ballpark. My first instinct is to cringe and well, most of the time your first instincts about something are right.

I don't think anyone can dispute the fact that the movie probably would've been better if the original cast symbolically passed the torch to the new cast. However, this isn't really a prerequisite for a relaunch to be good.

I haven't decided whether I'll see the movie yet. But if and when I do, it wont be due to having a female cast on-screen.

Another valid criticism is the use of racial stereotypes in Leslie Jones' character.

I like the visual effects because they look as cartoonish and fun as the original. I went back and compared the trailer to the library scene and the hotel scene where Venkman gets slimed and I think people forget how campy and slapstick the original was (I saw it for the first time when I was 6 and my parents said I loved it and wasn't scared of the ghosts). The new trailer also showed more of the proton packs and I thought they looked really good.

The only criticism I have of the new one is Leslie Jone's character. I'm not crazy about the only black character being the 'sassy loud streetwise black lady' and her scenes both previews seem the most jarring. But I'm a big fan of Melissa McCarthy, Kristin Wiig and Kate McKinnon, so I'm excited to see the new one.

The original ghostbusters was made so very long ago, they had the opportunity to use this version to show what the movie would have looked like if it had been made today, both in visual effects and in ethics. To use 80s stereotypes on black people in a modern remake is just such a waste of opportunity.

I feel like this is good as a Netflix kind of thing..
