Wearable Fitness Devices Don't Seem to Make You More Fit
Wearable Fitness Devices Don't Seem to Make You More Fit
But it's hard in a trial like this to know how much of that was because of the pedometer and the feedback, and how much was because of the nurse visits and coaching. What was needed was a large, well-designed study that truly teased out the contribution of wearable tech to weight loss programs. Last year, the results of such a study, the IDEA trial, were published.
"I once received a lot of blowback for an Upshot article in which I showed (with evidence) that exercise is not the key to weight loss. Diet is. Many, many readers cannot wrap their head around the notion that adding physical activity, and therefore burning more calories, doesn’t necessarily translate into results on the scale."

Is fitness the same thing as weight loss?
This article seems to conflate the two?
Not really...
I think the author's working from the abstract of the study, which doesn't specify its metrics for fitness, so it isn't called out as well as it could be.
Ah I totally seem to have skipped over parts! Thanks :)
Diet may be the key to weight loss but exercise is the key to building strength and endurance. Weight is different from health and it's important not to conflate the two.
But 99% of people who start exercising do it to lose weight and don't believe they will be successful any other way. All of the messaging from the fitness community is that fat is not fit. Exercise is for losing weight; losing weight is getting fit. The two are completely equivalent in most people's minds.
Sad. I want to go on long runs and figure out what to eat to keep my weight steady in a more active lifestyle..
Been saying that for years. So fucking frustrating.
I think a study like this in terms of gym membership will be pretty similiar. Obviously a lot of people don't use it properly or just buy it.
