This is so elegant--it must have looked amazing on. I have a few dresses from the 1930s; two of them are evening styles and, though they don't look like much on their own, when you put them on they are transformative. Sadly, they're also insanely delicate, so I'm mostly afraid to wear them.
If something is to delicate you can't wear it I can't imagine wanting to own it, where's the fun in having something so lovely if you can't use it? Though maybe you could borrow mannequins and next time you have a party raise some money for a nice charity by making it into an exhibition for the dresses!
Mostly, I agree. Sometimes you don't know until you try: I wore one of the dresses to a wedding, only to have one of the side seams disintegrate over the course of the evening. (AWKWARD.) But I used to style photo shoots, so I amassed a lot of weird stuff I couldn't really wear. Heh.
