Lying within the rugged wilderness of the state of Utah, shimmering like a mirage in the desolate scrubland surroundings is one of the largest and most unusual lakes in North America; the Great Salt Lake.

I'm firmly a mountain guy, but over the last couple of years I've taken some trips out to the west side of the lake, the ghost towns, and the art installs out there. And now, I love going out there. It's a great weekend roadie swing going around the lake and seeing the Tree of Life, Sun Tunnels, Spiral Jetty, and everything else out there.
And for the fishermen & women, the Pilot mountains out is one of the few places on earth where you can find Lahontan cutthroat trout. But they are listed as federally threatened, so you technically can't "target" them specifically.
Harbor master Dave Shear describes the Great Salt Lake as the "Freakiest Body of Water on Earth!" And with good reason. Sailing can be difficult because the winds change direction rapidly. Also, diners at the previous Saltair (the grand resort on the lake, not the current event center on the shore) reported seeing ball lightning dancing on the lake. The reports came in infrequently, but there were enough of them that they definitely warrant further explanation. Check out this volunteer training webpage at the Natural History Museum of Utah for some great info about GSL. https://nhmu.utah.edu/boneupongreatsaltlake
