Intro post

Hi, all! Welcome to any new folks, and please feel free to introduce yourselves! If you are the structure-loving type, here's some questions for you to discuss!

  • What are you looking for out of this community?
  • What do you do? And/or, what do you WANT to do?
  • What do you love about science?
  • What sorts of help and advice are you willing to share?

What are you looking for out of this community? I've put my (very modest) hopes and dreams for the comm in the About section, but if anyone has questions, just ask. I'm hoping that this comm can be a place to share interesting links and also be a place that people can have interesting and helpful discussions about working in science. Everything from "What advice do people have for transitioning from X position to Y position?" to "Should I get a Ph.D. or a Master's degree?" to "OH GOD MY SDS-PAGE GELS ARE RUNNING CROOKED HALP HALP!" Happy. Helpful. Fun.

What do you do? I got my Ph.D. in biochemistry and did a postdoc in cancer biology and virology before leaving the bench for my current position in science policy at a US government agency. Happily, I'm now doing what I want to do.

What do you love about science? I love that moment when you learn something that lets you go from "well, we don't know how this works yet, but X and Y happen...somehow...for some reason" becomes "OF COURSE! It all makes sense now!" That's my favorite part.

What sorts of help and advice are you willing to share? I'm happy to chat about all the usual scientist career things, with specializations in transitioning away from the bench, science policy careers, and working for the US federal government.
