The bottom level, the ninth, was nothing more than a circular floor about thirty feet in diameter. The stairs led upward and away from the deep-set chamber in an ever-widening spiral which was lost in the darkness, and at each of the eight levels above, a wheel-shaped room contained a multitude of shelves filled with uncounted scrolls and tomes, untouched for ages.
