I've been absolutely terrible about writing all summer long, for no reason. I had literally nothing else to do, and still couldn't work up the motivation to write. But school started this week. I sat down in class yesterday, and ended up doing some serious editing between taking notes, and then wrote ~1500 words after I got home. So! I don't know what happened, but I'll take it.
sometimes being forced to adhere to a schedule makes you be productive. It's about the only way I get anything done anymore.
I can definitely relate to this. My most productive times as a fic writer were when I participated in writing challenges where I had to send a partner one piece of writing a day. In the most recent challenge I did (Swesson Love Week on tumblr), I ended up writing nearly 13,000 words in a week. For some writers, that's not very much at all...but for me, it was astounding.
Now that I'm not under those constraints, it's difficult to get anything done at all. I guess I'm one of those people who only really flourish under pressure
13k is like a good month for me, and that's if I'm working on a schedule.
Yeah, it kind of feels like a distant dream at this point. I would definitely kill for 13k now...this month I've written like 400 words ;_;
You're not alone. I get so much more done when I know my writing time is limited.
Well...I'm not too pleased with myself, but... I wrote about 1,500 words (which was my weekly goal for my last fic, but I've increased it for this one to 2,500, so we'll see if I reach that by end of day.)
I edited the first 3 chapters of my WIP (Whose great idea was it to post without editing? Oh yeah. Mine. Not my finest moment.)
I've started looking at the narrative structure and influences I want to use when outlining my Dean Cas Pinefest fic and have come up with a few specific locations and inspirations I want to use. (I would say tropes too, but I'm not always sure I use that word correctly.)
2,589 words this week, divided between two fics. Too much hand-wringing and not enough writing this week. But now my school/work situation is under control so I'm hoping to get more words in this week.
I totally hear you on the work situation killing writing time.
The terrible thing is that I'm not even technically back to work yet. That starts next week. But I at least know how the schedule is going to be, and I now know how heavy my homework load is for the semester. Now I have a plan. :)
Up 4 episodes/ 1336 words on Dust. Finalized whose POV for which episode. Season 3 printed in preparation for editing. Nothing new on Sam Browning because I've been focusing on Dust. If I can knock out at least 2 episodes tomorrow afternoon, I get to work on Browning all evening. (more details will be posted to my tumblr tomorrow afternoon, under #public accountability)
I've been working on the fic I wasn't able to knock out in time for the DCBB. It's probably a good thing in the end that I didn't make the deadline because I was starting to cut narrative corners in order to make the cut-off, and I think the final product would have suffered for it in the end. I didn't write as much this week as I'd wanted to, but I'm putting in at least a couple hundred words in daily so it doesn't stagnate. I think I did about 3k this week. I'll get there eventually.
I haven't been writing fic.
I did however finish the first draft of my contemporary romance novel this week, and I'm about to take a month off to read, and I might finish an unfinished fic I have sitting in my google docs.
Congrats on the novel! That's so awesome. It must be a relief to have the first draft in the bag.
It fought me hard for half the book and I'm sure it's a hot mess but I'm not even going to open the file until October 1 and I'll deal with it then
writing a commercial novel is so different from writing fic. It's a lot lonelier. a LOT.
Well, I guess the fact that I've written 2k this week is better than the none I did last week? My DeanCas Pinefest fic is looking good considering I've only... 2k written for it, haha. forces self to not beat myself up over wordcounts
Eeeeeeee piningggg do you know what kind of plot it's going to be?
it may or may not involve a fake relationship >_>
hahahahahaha THE BEST TROPE
