Trope of the Week #11: Like an Old Married Couple
"Two characters who seem very comfortable with each other to the point that it seems like they have been married for a long time, though obviously it doesn't apply to couples who actually have been together for a long time. Usually it is done through constant arguments with each other, as only people who are so closely bonded can have such open communication between them (whether they will admit it or not). Someone is apt to comment that they behave just like a married couple."

I can see them talking like an old married couple as them being friends at the academy. I imagine maybe they would debate academic subjects a lot when she was his student or assistant, and they would both secretly love it. And then another professor would take notice and offhandedly say they’re like an old married couple, but it’s something the both of them think about for awhile ;)
And also when they’re dating and on the ship, they just act so married all the time that everyone forgets that they’re not married. They could bicker all the time, but it’s all in good fun because they tease each other but very subtly.
Also, do you think that they have any inside jokes? Idk, I can see it. And no one else has any idea what they’re going on about. I actually get that feeling in that TOS episode where he starts to play his lute and she starts humming. He looks a little annoyed and she says “I’m sorry. I did it again, didn’t I?” but he smiles and just goes along with it. And it’s great because it’s happened at least once before, and his response makes it feel like some kind of inside joke to me. And it’s adorable.
I totally has a brain fart and read this COMPLETELY wrong, ' As an old married couple' instead of 'like' LOL!
I do adore the episode...what's the name of it again, Charlie X, innit?...where they tease each other with her singing and him playing the lute. He doesn't even have to say anything, his face says it all.
One of my favorite scenes is when Kirk is all exasperated on the turbolift like OMG I just wanna rearrange his face blah blah blah and then excuses himself for her sake and she's like oh honey it's not just you. But it made me think of gossiping housewives haha! That along with the part where Kirk asks if it's going to be a problem with them working together and she's like absolutely not and Spock is like !!!!....umm unclear... LOL because he KNOWS she's furious at him LOL.
totally. I can just imagine they have fake arguments with each other where they apparently disagree about something (maybe something scientific about new findings in some planet etc ) but they are actually really flirting but only someone who knows them well and had observed them enough can understand that.
They sit side by side on the bridge, you know, just imagine them sitting there and the looks and apparently casual conversations they share about work..
I'm sure since they started dating and even before that they had their own polite debates about this or that and it's one of the things, her challenging him, that he found stimulating about her.
In the comics she beats him at chess after he said it was impossible for her to do that LOL but instead of being butthurt he's like 'God I'm in love with this woman' and he gave her the king piece of his chess set.
overall, I just imagine that when they are in public they are very comfortable with each other in a way that probably never ceases to surprise Kirk&Co.
I can only imagine what he thought the first time he realized just how smart she is. Like he knows she's smart of course, but smart enough to intellectually challenge a Vulcan? I bet he was really turned on lmao xD
