I first encountered Star Control at boarding school (which makes me sound a whole lot more posh than I actually am, but that's another story). There was a dubiously-legal copy of the original game on the shared computer in the dorm common room. Later, my roommate got a (likewise dubiously-legal) copy of SC2, and I spent so much time hanging over his shoulder watching him play that he gave me a copy of my own to get rid of me. I had to actually get a new computer to run it, because the one I had wasn't powerful enough.
Thinking back on this is making me remember how different computers were back then. Needing a more powerful computer to play a game as relatively small and uncomplicated as SC2 is one thing. And then, a few years later, my hard drive filled up, if you can believe such a thing. I had an attack of piety and made space by deleting all the dubiously-legal softwares, so that was it for my copy of SC2.
When the Ur-Quan Masters remake came out, I obtained a completely legal copy and finally got to finish the game.
