How many times have you seen Rogue One so far?

I just saw it again. I love it. Liked even more after a second viewing. What do you guys think? Who's your favorite character?

Twice, and now begins the long wait for the blu-ray. Overall, despite some issues, I really liked it.

Favourite, hmm, that is always hard. The ones I wanted to know and see more of were definitely Jyn and Saw on one hand, and Chirrut on the other. The one who gets the biggest props for courage in the face of overwhelming odds is Bodhi, because he is no fighter, and as a defector he faces a lot of distrust (and not to forget torture), so he's even more hopelessly out of his depth than everyone else. The funniest is K2, obviously, who is also the first movie droid that I like -- though Chirrut got the biggest laughs from the audience for his "Are you kidding me? I'm blind!" line when they are captured by Saw's extremists. The most moving scene was Chirrut's death, and Baze's reaction to it, no contest. These two also win the "best banter" award for "I don't need luck. I have you."

I like Chirrut Imwe (though, not his name which I couldn't figure out just watching the movie). I'm one with the Force, the Force is with me. I'm not religious but for some reason his faith made him the most compelling character for me.

    And K2 is awesome.

I've seen it twice. Once in IMAX 3D, once in 4DX 3D (which is a motion simulator). Two expensive tickets.

    • ReclamationSocietyDec 24, 2016 at 2:47 AM

Yeah, Chirrut and Baze are awesome. I am spiritual, and it was cool to see his faith. You know it's well done when non-religious and religious people alike dig it!

K-2SO... best droid in a Star Wars film? He's gotta be neck-and-neck with R2 for the title... (although TK from KOTOR is right there, too)

      • TheLizardQueenDec 24, 2016 at 2:49 AM

I'm hoping to see more of Chirrut and Baze in the future!

K2S0 and R2D2 are pretty close. I guess R2 gets extra points for being able to emote without speaking my language though.

      • Ben_SoloDec 24, 2016 at 2:56 AM

        Meatbags!

I don't know, there's something clear and pure about Chirrut. He's devoted his life to the Force. He's a strong fighter, he's funny, he's moving.

It was harder for me to feel for Jyn. She's too reluctant of a hero.

      • TheLizardQueenDec 24, 2016 at 3:06 AM

Reluctant heros are A OK for me. But I get the apprehension considering the tradition of Star Wars films past....

      • Ben_SoloDec 24, 2016 at 3:17 AM

I don't have a problem with reluctant heroes. Refusing the "call to adventure" is a part of the hero's journey. But for some reason, I didn't feel her turning point.

This article articulates a lot of basic issues I've got...

Jyn Erso begins her heroic journey only after the Rebels kidnap, interrogate, and strong-arm her into helping them find her father. She’s eventually joined by Captain Cassian Andor, a man whose first scene involves the coldblooded murder of a hapless informant, the latest in a long line of immoral acts on behalf of the Rebellion. Then a high-ranking Rebel officer orders him to assassinate Jyn’s father Galen, even though the complete destruction of Jedha City is all the proof they need that Galen’s work is done and the Death Star is up and running—killing him will achieve nothing. Why?

More gallingly, when Jyn and Cassian tell the Alliance about the dangers of the Death Star, and that they need to stage an assault on Scarif, the Rebels decide to sit this battle out, at least in part because Jyn is a “criminal.” (Hey, guys—you’re part of an armed revolt. Pot meet space kettle.) It’s not until Jyn and a few other Rebels rebel against the Rebellion (cough) and attack Scarif on their own that the rest of the Alliance is guilted into joining in.

But that doesn’t change the fact that the heroic faction of the original trilogy are too worried about their own necks to even try to save the galaxy at first. Narratively, what’s the point? The big battle scene happens anyway. If the Rebels had agreed to attack Scarif, Jyn’s crew could still have staged the exact same secret mission. The only thing that would have been lost is the gnawing feeling that the Rebellion aren’t particularly righteous or capable.

Ah yes that article has come up in conversation around my house recently!

Re: why still go after Galen, I chalked that one up to organizational drift in my mind to be honest. I feel like everything in Rogue One happened so fast that people were essentially going through the motions.

"Well shit... Do we really have time for another meeting?"

My Brain:" Gah... Okay FINE... At least it isn't the drawn out Senate scenes from the prequels..."

Re: Character Development and Background: I very much went into this expecting a one shot story... Maybe that's just my nerdy comic-fiend background taking, but I feel like a lot of the reason we didn't get to know the characters is because, despite watching it happen in "real time", most of us were viewing Rogue One through an almost "historical" lens.

By which I mean we know what happens next already. This was like a 9th grade History Class. You memorize the names for the big test and go "COOL THEY BLEW UP TWO PLANETS!" and then you move on to the next unit.

Just my way of navigating it through. I'm always interested in other perspectives!

Chirrut is definitely the most "pure" and "heroic" character, yes. If I absolutely HAD to pick a favourite, he'd probably get my vote. There are hints of what could have grown into a beautiful friendship between him and Baze and Jyn -- I kind of wish those two had been her co-leads instead of Cassian, who struck me as the least interesting of the lot.

Jyn's early selfish attitude definitely begged for a swift kick in the pants. Though in stark contrast to that, she also doesn't hesitate to shield K2 with her own body when Baze is about to blow him away, or to stick her neck out for the others when Saw's extremists capture them. She even calls them her "friends" then ... but afterwards she goes back into sullen, self-centered prat mode during the conversation with Saw. It's hard to know what to make of that contrast. On one hand, I'm glad for her selfless moments because they show there's still a potentially good person inside her who is capable of doing the right thing, someone worth cheering for as the protagonist. On the other hand, it feels like weak characterization for her to seesaw from "I don't care about anything or anyone" to "Don't you dare hurt my friends!" and back again in the span of what, 15 minutes overall?

A more distinct progression from "selfish git" to "big damn hero" would have been good. For example, one way to drive home the point that she's not the only one who's suffered in this war would have been to allow more room for Baze and Chirrut and Bodhi to show their shock and grief after Jedha is destroyed, and for Jyn to actually reach out to them in some small and hesitant way instead of just obsessing about finding her dad.

      • Ben_SoloDec 24, 2016 at 7:27 AM

On the other hand, it's kinda weak characterization to go from "Psh, who cares if the Empire rules, I'm just looking out for number one and good riddance to the lot of you" to "Don't you dare hurt my friends!" in the space of what, about 15 minutes?

        YES!!!

      • Ben_SoloDec 24, 2016 at 8:01 AM

My second time seeing it, it seemed so pointless to even contemplate the assassination of Galen. There's supposed to be all this tension of will Cassian snipe him out... but there's no purpose and he ends up dying anyway.

It's just weird that we get all this backstory on Jyn -- and I didn't end up feeling for her as much as I did for Chirrut. And I think it's something in her transition from selfish to selfless that got lost for me.

It's the Han Solo/Indiana Jones template: the lovable rogue who rises above his selfishness to throw in for a bigger cause. But I guess I didn't feel it for her. The switch from "I don't care who wins" to "rebellions are BUILT on hope!"

And then Chirrut is this bright spot of faith/hope in the midst of all this darkness.

I just need some faith in the world, Lizard Queen!

      • ChadramarDec 24, 2016 at 2:09 PM

I don't think Jyn was intended as a traditional "loveable" rogue per se -- she doesn't have the smirk or the swagger or the smart mouth. For me, that's a good thing because that sort of character usually gets my hackles up like whoa due to the fact that the line between "sass" and "asshole" is a REALLY narrow one in my book. Yes, that includes Han, which is probably heresy in this fandom. :p I didn't like him at all until TFA.

  • TheLizardQueenDec 24, 2016 at 2:24 AM

I've only seen it the one time but I love love love Jyn and K2S0!

Fella was disappointed the "space monkey" from he trailers (AKA: Bistan) wasn't a more prominent character however. LOL!

    • ReclamationSocietyDec 24, 2016 at 2:49 AM

😁 Jyn is great. My favorite is Chirrut, but I liked all of 'em. Wish we'd seen more from Saw, he's awesome. So is his crew! The Bistan laughing clip didn't make it in! That clip was awesome!

      • TheLizardQueenDec 24, 2016 at 2:51 AM

I know right!? Bistan looked so awesome in the trailer!

Chirrut is amazing...looking forward to the novel about him!

  • NCory17Dec 25, 2016 at 8:07 AM

I'm going to go and see it tomorrow for the first time. I am really excited for it, and have heard it's a great movie. Don't want to read these comments to prevent spoilers though :P

  • purploonyDec 24, 2016 at 6:39 AM

I've seen it twice, and appreciated it much more the second time. The first time, it didn't feel like a Star Wars film to me, and I walked out thinking it wasn't as good as Episode VII. After the second viewing, I found myself really caring for the characters and being impressed with the performances (specifically Cassian and Galen, both of whom I didn't appreciate on first view). Compared to Rogue One, Ep VII does feel more Star Wars-y but it's also very talky and formulaic. Rogue One, by itself, is a better film for me :)

  • Daredevil22Dec 24, 2016 at 6:45 AM

I am going for the second time somewhere this week, and i might go a third time
